Help Ryan & Bek Do IVF!

Bek & Ryan’s GoFundMe Page

Hey, y'all!

We are Ryan and Bek, and we live in Summerville, SC. By some twist of fate, this South Carolina girl and Scottish boy found love at first sight through a dating app (thanks, Bumble!). For two years, we have been trying to start a family. But after multiple IUI treatments, an ectopic pregnancy, an a ruptured Fallopian tube, we have been told our only hope for having children will be through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

After years of not being able to conceive on our own, we sought out the help of a fertility clinic. We were blesses to be matched with the most AMAZING medical team (shout out to Dr. Cook & Nurse Becky!) who ultimately diagnosed us with “unexplained infertility.” It was recommended that medicated IUI fertility treatments would be the best path for us to take in trying to get pregnant. With nervous excitement, we began our fertility journey. After many needles, hormones, and a failed first round, the amount of joy we felt when we saw those two pink lines on the pregnancy test after our second IUI cycle was almost indescribable. We did it. We were starting a family together.

Until we weren't.

Just a week shy of our first ultrasound, we got the devastating news that we were miscarrying. We were crushed, and unfortunately, had no idea how much of a nightmare we were in for. Two weeks later, Bek went back to the fertility clinic to check her hCG levels to make sure everything was on track. Instead of dropping as they should have, her levels had quadrupled. After bloodwork and multiple ultrasounds, the doctors determined that Bek needed an urgent D&C to remove any extra tissue that could be in her uterus. We prayed that would be the end of the month that we had been dealing with the turmoil of a miscarriage.

Following the procedure, her levels still hadn't dropped, leading doctors to determine that the pregnancy was ectopic. To terminate the dangerous ectopic pregnancy, Bek had to receive a double injection of Methotrexate (a drug often used in cancer patients), leaving us both mentally and physically drained. A few days later, after a night of excruciating pain, we went back to the clinic only to learn that Bek was bleeding internally and needed emergency surgery to remove a Fallopian tube that had ruptured as a result of the ectopic pregnancy.

For all that we have been through in the past month, the most devastating news has been that the safest way for us to conceive going forward will be through IVF treatments. In the United States, 95% of insurance companies provide no coverage for IVF, making it difficult for many who need these treatments to be able to afford them. Our quote for the IVF procedures came to $6,200, with an additional estimate of $3,000-6,000 for the required medications.

As it takes a village to raise a child, sometimes it takes a village to help conceive a child. To help pay for our treatment, we have decided to put together a "Puzzle Fundraiser." For anyone who donates to our treatments, we will write their name on the piece of a puzzle that will eventually be hung in our nursery as a reminder of all those who have helped us build our family.

We don't want anyone to feel obligated help as we know how tight funds can be, especially after this past year. Our friends and family have been AMAZING through this whole process, and they will never know how eternally grateful and appreciative we are to them. We are saving as much as we can, and feel a bit like Bernie Sanders asking for your financial support. Any little bit helps.
