Help Salvadoran women imprisoned for stillbirth
Hi - My name is Kristen and I had a stillbirth when I was eight months pregnant. My wife Karla and I were devastated and we wanted to honor our daughter's memory. We started the Lucia Anaís Fund to collect donations for women in El Salvador who need money for food, housing, and other basic supplies after being released from prison.
They were behind bars even though they committed no crime. In fact, like Karla and I, they simply had stillbirths. In almost all cases, they were rushed to the hospital for severe bleeding, but instead of being treated with respect, they were suspected of having an abortion. And in a country like El Salvador, where an abortion is essentially equivalent to murder, many women received prison sentences of 30 years.
Thankfully, activists have freed a number of the women, who I worked with for four years through the Center for Reproductive Rights and Women's Equality Center. Once they are free, it's critical they have the basic necessities to get back on their feet - especially since they were all extremely low-income to begin with.
All donations will be shared with a non-profit leading the charge to set free and support this group of women.
Karla and I thank you for your generosity - in support of our difficult journey, and in support of Salvadoran women whose stillbirths were treated as crimes.
Sincerely,
Karla and Kristen
