Help Salwa Fight Cancer

On January 8, 2022, our friend, Salwa Mogaddedi, was diagnosed with Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 27 (still awaiting staging via PET scan). She will require treatment urgently, and her tentative start date for chemotherapy is on January 31, 2022.

 

While Salwa’s doctors remain optimistic with her treatment, the treatments are physically and emotionally draining and with the global pandemic in place, Salwa has been placed at very high risk. As a result, she cannot work. With a diagnosis like this, there are many things that need to be handled before beginning treatment. Firstly, chemotherapy is extremely harmful to fertility, she will need to have her eggs preserved, which will require a sum of $13,000. $8,000 of that is being covered by the Livestrong Foundation but she will need help paying for the rest of the balance: $5,500. Due to being high risk and immune-compromised, Salwa’s oncology team urges isolation as her chemotherapy regimen cannot be delayed or postponed. As a result, Salwa has entered FMLA but was denied short-term and long-term disability. Since she is unable to work and may need to be out of work longer than what FMLA provides, this means that money for day to day activities will be needed, such as a cleaning service to ensure complete sanitation, along with help paying for prepared meals (because she will be immunocompromised, the only people she can interact with day to day is her husband and mother in law), and other healthcare expenses that may arise. While friends and family are doing what they can, the financial burden may be too much to bear. For transparency, we will be providing receipts and offering updates as time moves along. We are asking for $30,000 right now, which would be a huge relief and a great help for Salwa. Anyone that knows her, knows that she is passionate about the rights and welfare of other people, a strong advocate for workers, and her community at large. Doing this Go Fund Me is something she was not comfortable doing herself, but has agreed, due to our urging. As per Salwa’s decision, any remaining funds that she doesn’t use towards the treatment will be allocated towards organizations and foundations involved in cancer research, fertility preservation programs for diagnosed cancer patients, or other funds that are in dire need of assistance. We appreciate any help you can provide for her.
