Help Sandfield School have a greener future

In September, the team from Scotscape came to Sandfield to install our wonderful living gate. This is one of the first living gates to be installed in the UK. Plants have been specially chosen to act as a barrier against pollutants. The living gate now completes the green wall, with our ivy screening around the car park and artificial ivy screening at the front of the school. Scientists from the RECLAIM Network Plus project at the University of Surrey have monitored the levels of pollutants before the green wall installation and will now repeat these experiments to measure the impact.
Sandfield children helped plant up the living gate and our year 5 + 6 will use the same plants within the school grounds to enhance the biodiversity of our school site
Our thanks must go to our partners within their community for their support with this amazing project: Sandfield parents, local charity Zero Carbon Guildford, and the University Of Surrey’s world-leading air pollution research lab the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE). This has been an ambition of Sandfield School for many years and it is a great moment that it has reached its fruition, protecting our environment to improve the health and wellbeing of all who attend and work at Sandfield. Our big plan now is to install another living wall in the playground and a second living gate on the other side of the school. Each gate costs £9,000, but together we can do it! We need to buy the plants, the bags and the irrigation systems that keep everything alive. £6 will buy a bag of compost, £10 will buy a pair of plants to go in the gate. The irrigation system will cost £300. Contributions for the cladding bags that the plants live in start at £1,000. Please help us if you can.
