Sara's Top Surgery Fund
Donation protected
If you have met Sara Heermans, you've probably received care and help from them. Sara is an incredibly kind, compassionate, and deeply caring person who is often focused on how best to support the people around them. Now, it's time for Sara's community to join together to help take care of THEM instead.
In 2021, Sara was set to get top surgery, however, due to a variety of factors, the surgery fell through at that time. For the past few years, they have been hoping to find the right doctor and the right timing, and finally, they've found both and will be having surgery on May 18th!
Unfortunately, the doctor that Sara has found does not take their insurance. The surgery, and everything related to it, will cost around $10,500. While this is a huge barrier to the surgery being possible, we believe that if we work together we can help make this dream a reality. As the world around us fights hard to attack, harm, and remove the rights of queer, trans, and nonbinary folks, it feels more critical than ever to help those within our community get the care they need and deserve. Gender-affirming care has been proven to improve quality of life, reduce the risks of suicide and depression, and significantly decrease the impacts of gender dysphoria.
We've set our goal at $12,000 to account for any extra medical needs that arise, cover Go Fund Me's transaction fees, and help make up for the unpaid time Sara will likely need to take off of work. That said, anything, even the smallest amount, helps immensely. Thank you for being here, for reading, for being in our community, for supporting each other, for working together to create a world in which everyone gets the care they need and deserve.
NOTE: We will also be hosting a photoshoot fundraiser to help raise money for the surgery. If you are interested in learning more about that, here's the link to do so.
"Being queer saved my life. Often we see queerness as deprivation. But when I look at my life, I saw that queerness demanded an alternative innovation from me. I had to make alternative routes; it made me curious; it made me ask, 'Is this enough for me?'"
