Daughter, sister and friend
Sarah Owens on July 11th, 2024 was severely T-boned by a drunk driver on her way home and was airlifted to the number one trauma center in the state. We almost lost her on multiple occasions and the doctors were very adamant about little to no hope with her case. With her brain swelling for 17 days, they've never had a case like her and were completely at a loss for strategies. They exhausted every option such as, medically induced coma, 3 different heavy sedatives and paralytics with multiple other medications as well. As a last resort, she had emergency brain surgery 8 days into her stay. She is currently facing a battle no soul should ever endure, especially at 20 years old.
Going from her bright, self assured, goofy, bubbly self, to being laid in a hospital bed unable to function is devastating.
We know everyone says it, but Sarah is truly and honestly the kindest soul we know. An animal advocate/lover, a God fearing Christian, the most giving person and the most self assured 20 year old we know. Enjoying fishing, exploring, traveling, new experiences, driving and roadtripping, all of which will be on hold for a long time to come. This girl would go above and beyond if it meant you were able to smile. If you had the pleasure of meeting her for yourself, there is not a doubt in my mind you would respect every quality of this human and be amazed with who she is.
Sarah is a hard working woman. She was working as a machinist at a machine shop, never missing a day of work, we've come to learn she's twice the man and triple the woman we'll ever be. Proud is an understatement with her.
Being completely independent and liking it that way. Buying her first truck and her first boat all on her own and paying, happily I should say, for all that comes with it.
The day she bought her Ford Ranger was the happiest day of her life. She put hours, days and weeks making that truck into what she wanted it to be, basically building it from the ground up. This was only 9 months ago she bought it. Unfortunately her truck was totaled in the accident. (see picture)
Sarah has gone through 6 surgeries already with more to come. She had surgeries on the following:
Heart, Liver, Spleen, Hand, Eye, and emergency brain surgery.
Sarah was in the SICU (surgical intensive care unit) for 34 days and is officially making way into her rehabilitation at the same hospital, where she is anticipated to stay for weeks to come.
With all the prayers she's received, she's had miraculous healing thus far. As of now, we have an extremely long road to independence again.
Struggling with walking, coordination, remembering things, patience, battling depression and panic attacks daily, this hospitalization stay has been traumatizing for her. The hardest thing we've had to accept is the repercussions of someone else's mistake. They've taken things from her we will never get back. She's going to need physical therapy, occupation therapy, speech therapy and psychological help for numerous months to come. We thankfully didn't lose her, but everyday we feel the loss of what should've been.
Sarah had the brightest future, as of now we're embracing with open arms possibility and hope. We would appreciate prayers and any support. All support will go towards legal fees, medical bills, rehabilitation, trauma therapy and time away from work and independence.
Sarah won't be able to drive, work, or live independently for well over a year. With traumatic brain injuries, for 4-6 months until swelling has completely receded, she'll need 24/7 care.
We don't know why bad things happen to good people, you hear that all the time, but we have faith in community for support.
Thank you for taking the time to read and all compassion during this difficult time.
