Help Satellite Shark Tagging Research in Isla Mujeres
Donation protected
Dear Friends,
We are excited to share a meaningful initiative that Scuba Life Cozumel is undertaking to promote shark conservation in Quintana Roo.
As many of you have been closely following the relationship we have been building with members of Cooperativa Kab Xoc, this is naturally the next step in supporting our mission to help them transition from shark fishermen to Divemasters promoting sustainable tourism! They have already completed their Rescue Diver training and are well on their way to becoming PADI Divemasters!
Our goal is to raise $178,000 MXN ($9,650 USD) to purchase 5 Lotek Satellite Fin Spot Tags including 1 year of online service and tracking on the Argos Satellite System.
These tags are essential for tagging and researching local shark populations and their movements in Isla Mujeres and across the Caribbean.
This vital research will help the local community of ex-shark fishermen transition from fishing to sustainable tourism experiences with sharks.
Sharks are a keystone species, playing a critical role in maintaining the health of our oceans. By supporting their conservation in Quintana Roo, we can positively impact coastal communities throughout the Mesoamerican Reef.
You may have seen on social media that sharks have been spotted around Cozumel much more frequently and this is not just luck, but a direct reciprocal of this project that's approaching the 2 year mark of not fishing sharks.
One Hammerhead Shark that was tagged by Saving Our Sharks, Kab Xoc, Choojajauil and Scuba Life on February 24th was later tracked to Cozumel waters! This travel log data of the 8ft 192lbs Hammerhead Shark is incredibly useful to divers but also to biologists working to create stronger protections for endangered sharks in the area and nationally!
You can follow along with the tracking of this shark here:
This unique opportunity allows you to actively participate in the conservation efforts and witness firsthand the incredible work being done.
We believe that with your generous support, we can achieve this goal and contribute to a more sustainable future for both marine life and local communities.
Thank you for being a part of this important project and for your continued support.
Warm regards,
JP
