Caffe Sapore is being threatened with eviction.
This neighborhood cafe has been a part of North Beach for the last 23 years. One of the first cafes to open north of Union Street. Caffe Sapore is a place for neighbors and families to gather, for visitors to find respite, and for people to come together.
Caffe Sapore is a family owned business. I am the sole owner of this business and live in the neighborhood with my wife and three children. We are also an employer of many local people. Some of our employees have been with us for 18 years. We are current on our rent and the landlord has given no reason for the end of our lease. We must fight. We must survive.
With your support, Sapore can fight this unjust eviction, relocate to a new location, or support our employees through the transition.
Our first goal is to save this neighborhood institution. If we offer to cover the costs of some of the seismic retrofitting and remodeling we may be able to stay. This would require paying multiple contractors, plumbers, electricians, etc. This cost will be approximately $60,000 - $70,000 (depending on the specifics of the new agreement) and will also require a closure of the cafe for several months. The cost of which will be well over $100,000 in lost income for my family and my employees. Part of the funds raised here will be offered to employees for the lost salary.
If the landlord is unwilling to negotiate, we will have to find a new location. This will mean new permits, new T&Ls, close out costs, and other additional costs. Your contribution will help underwrite the move that will also include lost income for employees. The total cost of relocating will be well over $100,000 and closer to $200,000. Caffe Sapore can afford some of these costs, but not all.
As a last resort option, we are determined to keep this unfortunate situation from upsetting the lives of our employees and will offer them a severance package to keep them housed and fed during their search for new employment. The payout will cover 1-2 months of salary for each employee and the remainder will be used to help with additional close out costs such as suppliers and taxes. The total costs will be well over $100,000.
All of these funds will be added to Caffe Sapore's business account and will be used solely for business purposes.
I thank you for your support during this difficult time.
