Build an animal shelter in Mexico
Tax deductible
Isla Animals Rescue is HOMELESS. We have been forced out of our shelter space on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We ARE GETTING SO CLOSE to completing the building of our shelter, even if we still haven't raised all the funds needed to complete it, even when we are split between so many rescue cases that need our attention... We couldn't just SIT AND WAIT! Our plans for the new shelter will be able to house dogs and cats, have space for isolation cases, and for visiting vets to do surgeries and consults for our animals.
Isla Animals does not have the money to make this happen, but you can help by donating to our building fund. It is our dream to have our own space that no one can take away from us.
We broke records this year, we have adopted over 200 dogs, sterilized more than 1000 animals, and we keep rescuing from the streets! Since out eviction we have taken over 100 dogs, and found creative ways to provide the space the dogs need and the best quality of veterinary care.
We are scrambling and our hearts are BREAKING... the animal care we have provided for 23 years is still needed! But we cannot operate with no shelter. SOS PLEASE HELP!!!!
Since 2001 Isla Animals Rescue, located on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, has been fighting to rescue and sterilize the street dogs of the island. We’ve worked tirelessly for decades to offer free services to the community and to offer government-like services (there are no government programs for animals or humane society here). We operate SOLELY on donations. By forcing us out of our location, they’re stopping us from the work that we do for free. We cannot afford a new location, not to mention there are no animal shelter-like locations on the island even available! By taking away our shelter the 200 dogs we’ve sent out this year alone would never have been possible! We are in a CRISIS.

Current cost breakdown (September 2024)
Next projects include:
- windows/doors: we are missing 8 windows on the upstairs volunteers' apartment, and 5 doors
- shelter door: while the shelter room is usable and ready, we are missing a big door that is going to let the dogs go in and out as they please.
- fencing: we are hoping to separate our outdoor space in different areas, partly for the dogs safety, partly so they can safely enjoy the outdoor space.
- awenings: we are missing 2 important awnings on top of windows and doors which will serve to protect the building from storms and heavy rain and provide shade
- landscaping: we are hoping to have a variety of trees that provide shade for our dogs and volunteers!
- protections: we are missing 2 protections for stairs to ensure the safety of anyone in the property
- electric and plumbing: we are missing the electrical installation on our second floor of the shelter side, as well as plumbing and installation.
- painting: we still have hundreds of meters of wall that needs to be painted
- building: we have the front of the property to be finished (built but needs to be cover in cement and sealed) as well as the finishing on the perimetral wall
- safety: we are hoping to install barb wire on the perimetral wall to make sure the space is as safe as we can make it for our animals.
- corridor for pen area: we are hoping to install a corridor in front of our outdoor pen area which will provide extra shade, storage space, and will work as a second entrance to avoid mixing dogs during their isolation period.
- cat area: we have an are of 5m x 5m which we are hoping to roof (maybe palapa?) and fence to create a big catio for our rescue kitties.
- land filling: we still need 1 or 2 trips of 14m2 of dirt to fill the land and provide safety during storms and avoid flooding and level the land so we can install grass or create spaces for the dogs to enjoy the outdoor space.
These projects are being tackle one by one by our volunteers and the necessary professionals as funds are available. The next one on the making is all the electrical and plumbing, and after we are hoping to finish the building of the volunteers apartment and install the windows.
