Help SAVE John Steinbeck's House!
Tax deductible
Don't let John Steinbeck's house be turned into a McMansion!
We need your help. The Sag Harbor Partnership saved the historic Sag Harbor Cinema by buying and rebuilding it. We are now trying to save the equally historic property that John and Elaine Steinbeck purchased in 1953. Their modest house and his writer's gazebo sit on a 1.8 acre parcel right in Sag Harbor village, and John and Elaine became integral members of our community.
Sag Harbor provided both the stimulation and the solitude that Steinbeck needed for his work. His last books, Travels with Charley: In Search of America and The Winter of Our Discontent were both written here. John Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962. Steinbeck had received the Pulitzer Prize for the Grapes of Wrath in 1940. The $1000 award money was given to a writer then; and when the money ran out, Steinbeck let the writer stay in his California home. The Steinbeck Writers' Retreat would be a most fitting future use for his home.
Presently we have a contract for the property and have raised almost all of the purchase money needed, but we have additional outstanding funds needed for our closing and legal fees. We are thrilled to be partnering with one of the greatest writers' residency trusts in America, the Michener Center for Writers of the University of Texas at Austin, which has deep connections with the East End and will develop and manage the residency with a very generous endowment promised.
YOUR DONATION NOW, LARGE OR SMALL, IS KEY TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THIS EFFORT, AND ALL DONATIONS ARE WELCOME!
If you love literature, please give what you can, and join us in honoring a great humanitarian writer, so relevant today, and so deeply a part of American letters!
Donations are tax-deductible, and donations of $1000+ will allow a donor to have their name on a brick; donations of $2500+ will earn a spot on the hall plaque honoring supporters; and a full list of naming opportunities can be found on our website, sagharborpartnership.org.
With our sincere gratitude,
The Sag Harbor Partnership
