Help Save Old Raleigh Cemetery
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Jack Brewer with the Memphis Ghost Hunters. Recently, I come in to be the new owner of Old Raleigh Cemetery. I am over joyed with this new change. Old Raleigh Cemetery has been neglected over the years but not forgotten. The Old Raleigh Cemetery was founded in 1825, this historic cemetery is the final resting place for Isaac Rawlings (Memphis second mayor),some of the first settlers of Shelby County and so many others. The Raleigh cemetery is a part of Memphis history which now needs maintenance to be preserved. The cemetery is hidden but larger than it first appears. It is seven acres located on Old Raleigh Lagrange; it is difficult to tell how big the cemetery is upon first entrance because so much of it is covered in weeds and underbrush. Because the cemetery is set in a beautiful wooded area, maintenance is a bit more difficult. Old Raleigh Cemetery is rich with history stretching from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. It was originally part of the Raleigh Cumberland Church, which was the first Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the area. The earliest burial dates back to 1830. The people buried there range over all socioeconomic and cultural groups. In the 1870's during the yellow fever epidemic, many of Memphians whom fled the city to Raleigh are buried there.
My ultimate goal is to make this historic cemetery beautiful again. But I need your help. There is a small list of repairs to start off with like fence repair/replaced, downed trees and underbrush need to be removed and/or cut back, and headstones need repaired and safe cleaning to preserve them. Any amount of donation will help and will be greatly appreciated. If you can't donate money, we will gladly take anyone willing to volunteer their time and effort in helping make this historical cemetery a thing of beauty. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. We also plan to start a Facebook page for the cemetery so everyone can see the progress and learn more about this hidden gem.
Thank you,
Jack Brewer
