Help Save the Critically Endangered Ojibwe Horse!
Donation protected
The Ojibwe Horse is a critically endangered breed of horse who historically lived in the boreal forests of Northwestern Ontario and the northern United States. They had a close, cooperative relationship with the Indigenous people of that area and are considered a spirit animal.
Unfortunately, as a result of technological advancements and colonization, this breed became almost extinct. In 1977 there were only 4 horses left.
Thanks to the efforts of a relatively small group of breeders, the population of the Ojibwe Horse is now back up to just under 200 horses.
Today, the Ojibwe horse is mainly used for Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning as well as for Cultural Programming. They are a gentle, friendly and intelligent horse that is perfect for these activities.
The challenge we face today is that the Ojibwe Horse community is still small and awareness of this breed is limited. Many of those working towards the conservation of this breed are small, family run farms and finances become a barrier.
We are lucky to be hosting Chase (Babaaminizhikawaad which means "he chases them around”) at Sagehill Stables. Chase is one of the breeding stallions of Grey Raven Ranch, located on Seine River First Nation in Ontario and he is currently the only Ojibwe stallion in Manitoba.
This summer we are wanting to collect the semen of Chase to be used to inseminate genetically compatible mares in Manitoba or to be frozen to be saved for the future or sent to other regions with genetically compatible mares.
Chase is getting older and he has an important bloodline that we want to preserve.
We are looking for help to raise the funds necessary for this important conservation project.
Collection ranges from $1500-$2500 depending on a variety of factors. We are aiming to raise $3000 so that we can ensure that we have enough money to transport Chase to the reproduction centre, train him on the phantom mount, collect the semen and store it.
Any funds raised over and above what is necessary for collection will go towards the Ojibwe Horse Society's breeding program.
Any amount that you can donate would be a huge help!
If you are not able to donate, please share this Go Fund Me to raise awareness about this fascinating and important breed of horse.
