Help Save the Globe Bookstore and Cafe- Prague, CZ

Dear Friends,
Over the 27 years that we have been in business, we have seen many ups and downs, we have survived economic recessions to just about anything else you can think of, but 2020 has made all our previous travails seem trivial. Frankly, the Globe’s business has collapsed since the arrival of Covid-19 in late March and now, with another forced closure due to the recent restrictions put in place by the government, we must again close the Globe Café until at least the 3rd of November 2020 (most likely longer) and we find ourselves on the razor’s edge. We are seriously concerned about the future wellbeing of our staff and the survival of the Globe itself.
While the bookstore will remain open for now, and we would love to see you come in and pick up some titles, it is also evident that without our café functioning properly, our business is not sustainable, and as long as the coronavirus still plagues us, we expect our business to be crippled until at least early 2021.
We have discussed launching a GoFundMe page a few times since the crisis began and we have always decided to try to get through this without such a last-ditch effort, but now, our backs are against the wall, we have our staff to think about, and we also have growing debts to our suppliers, our landlord, and the government and have decided to give it a try.
We still believe in our core principle: that offering a unique meeting space for artists, writers, students, and travelers to gather to discuss the arts, life, politics, and many other facets of the world coupled with an eclectic English language bookstore full of hand-picked titles from all genres is needed in today’s world, though it is a somewhat dated concept these days.
We were the first, and we are now the last business of this kind standing in the Czech Republic and, after 27 years of pursuing this labor of love, we would hate to go down this way and kindly ask for any support you may be able to offer during this unfortunate time that has undermined so many of us, but has hit the Globe particularly hard.
All funds raised will go to our staff and our business, hopefully providing a bridge until the situation with the virus will allow us to go back to operating on a more normal platform.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide. We are very grateful and look forward to seeing you on the other side of this!
