Help save the Tiwi Islands historic Church
Donation protected
The Old Church on Bathurst Island is a beautiful piece of Tiwi Island History. Built in 1941 by builder Peter De Hayr and a team of tiwi men. It was crafted from cypress pine which was cut by hand and milled on the island. Ironwood was also found and cut by hand to form the uprights and beams. These uprights still stand 82 years later, they have saved this beautiful monument that we want to restore to it's pristine beauty.
The interior and altar are beautifully adorned with Tiwi Art which will also be preserved.
The church may be recognised by some as the picturesque final wedding venue in the wonderfully uplifting movie Top End Wedding.
This fund-raising campaign is being lead by Sister Anne Gardiner AM, Senior Australian of the year in 2017, who came to the Tiwi Islands 70 years and has been awarded the AM for her work in the preservation of Tiwi culture and history.
This campaign started with some energetic local fund raising, but more and more supporters have asked for a place to donate. Please be part of Tiwi History and help save this beautiful building.
