Help school for disabled children during COVID-19
Donation protected
In memory of Anuruddha Abeysinghe, I am hosting a fundraiser with the hope of funding some of the requirements of Ape Lamai (if more is collected it will go towards the listed items below). Some information provided by Ape Lamai attached is in Sinhala. Should you require a translation please contact me.
Ape Lamai is a not-for-profit organisation for children with disabilities and learning difficulties in Sri Lanka. Ape Lamai provides schooling, vocational training, and board for over 60 students aged 3 to 24. The organisation receives little government funding (25 US cents per student per day, wages for 4 teachers, textbooks and 1 uniform per student per year) so it relies heavily on the generosity of donors.
Ape Lamai helps children and young people with disabilities develop into independent adults who can engage in an active, constructive role within the community. Ape Lamai provides services for children from age 3 with any disability or learning difficulty. This includes but is not limited to:
- Intellectual disability
- Developmental delays
- Physical disabilities
- Behavioural disorders
- Speech-language disorders
- Autism/PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)
- Down syndrome
- Attention deficit disorders
At Ape Lamai children learn literacy, numeracy, health & hygiene, music & dance, social skills, self-help skills, hand-eye coordination, handicrafts and cooking. Ape Lamai also provides speech therapy, physiotherapy, vocational training, computer education/training, home-making skills training & community integration programs.
Ape Lamai has reached a crisis point due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Some teachers and staff are unable to travel to Ape Lamai so the remaining staff are stretched thin. People would usually come to Ape Lamai with food for the children but since the lockdown, they haven't been able to do this.
US$110 will fund dinner (basic menu) for all children.
US$110 will fund lunch (basic menu) for all children.
US$100 will cover the electricity bill for a month.
US$90 will fund a specially made support chair.
US$80 will fund breakfast (basic menu) for all children.
US$55 will fund a specially made bed for a child at the hostel.
US$30 will sponsor a child for a month.
US$30 will cover the telephone bill for a month.
US$30 will fund morning or afternoon tea (basic menu) for all children.
US$15 will cover the internet bill for a month.
Ape Lamai was already in need of funds for the following:
- Employing a hostel warden (wages are $215 per month) – the school does not currently employ a hostel warden due to lack of funding; the school principal and staff take turns in supervising the hostel
- Increasing trainee-teachers wages from US$50 a month to US$ 75 a month (Currently it does not meet the minimum wage)
- Purchasing specialised sports equipment for disabled children
- A computer (that works with advanced apps like Adobe Premiere/3D Max as they currently have a very basic old computer)
- SLT Fiber Internet Connection (estimated cost US$70 for installing)
- A4 Scanner
- DSLR Camera + Lens to capture events
- Walkie talkie system
- CCTV System (currently have a small system that does not cover the entire school)
- Intercom Sound casting system (currently have a small system in the school)
- TVs (for classrooms)
- Creating a separate area for vocational training
- Creating separate classrooms – their classrooms are currently being used for vocational training
- Building new hostel rooms/accommodation for new applicants
