Help Scots on the Block Attend DNC

Welcome!
My name is Rebecca Miller, and I'm your CD-8 DNC delegate! Being elected by my peers meant so much to me. I'm honored, but I'm a little nervous. But I have company! My beloved Dennis Vogel was elected at large! Plus, his mom, Deborah Vogel, was elected for CD8.
A cropped picture to get all three of us in the photo--plus one kid.
Clan Miller-Vogel SWEEP! What a delightful outcome! The Scots on the Block are heading to the Windy City.
I'm looking forward to showing off my hometown. I can't wait to meet my other Dems from around the country to share ideas, support common causes, and cast my ballot to re-elect President Joe Biden!
Who are the Scots?
Our ancestors hail from Scotland, and we're involved in the Scottish games and other cultural events. Dennis and I put our Scottish flag next to our US flag, and our neighbor referred to us as the Scots on the Block—it stuck!
We're the "normies" of the group--suburban dwelling Thornton/Northglenn citizens who volunteer to help our local Dem races, get petitions signed to protect women's body autonomy and create good trouble. Dennis is a chemist, Deb is a semi-retired hospice nurse, and I'm the Defacto Director of Nurse Aide Education for a company that helps families with kids with disabilities.
I'm great at doing stuff!
It was quite an honor to receive this nomination. As disability rights activists with children and other family members on the Autism Spectrum, we will be representing our ASD community during the convention.
What causes do we represent?
Our platform includes:
1. The expansion of paid family caregiving to ALL 50 states.
2. Medicaid expansion to protect the most vulnerable and the elimination of the penalty for people over 50 on Medicaid to surrender their property to the government at the time of their death, persevering generational wealth building.
3. Safe staffing ratios for all nurses, including hospice field nurses.
4. Equity in testing for Nurse Aide, which includes bilingual support and translation services, and eliminating third-party testing services to deem competency, allowing a nurse aide instructor to determine if a nurse aide is ready to enter the field.
Why the go-fund-me?
It's a family affair and a family fundraiser!
Our estimated cost as a family unit is overwhelming. The cost of the convention hotel is over $400 a night. Deb has a roommate, making $600 plus taxes, food, other hotel expenses, and gas. We're driving because Deb is on oxygen, and oxygen plus airplane equals a big tangle. She gets breathless when we walk long distances, so DIA, especially O'Hare airport, is not an option.
This epic road trip for all three of us is estimated to cost $8000. If we meet this goal and have money remaining after the trip, it will be donated to support our local Democratic races.
My Marriot Bonvoy card is trembling in excitement. We are grateful for any amount you can donate.
Why did we decide to run for DNC Delegate?
It's easy. We're doing this for our kids and the disabled community at large. It's about invisible disability representation with a dash of parental honey-badger gusto to make sure our Democracy holds, and that is why voting for Joe is ESSENTIAL.
Let's face it. The MAGA movement would rather the old, the poor, and the disabled go away and die, as evidenced by the call to eliminate protections such as Medicaid and Medicare. The Project 2025 plan, the mass deportations, the punishment of "blue states'--I saw it in action during the pandemic when I was reusing PPE as a hospice nurse. It's not a matter of if--it's WHEN.
To quote Angela Davis:
We must support President Biden. FULL STOP. 100%.
Please donate what you can to make this trip possible.
