Help Scott & Katie Manage ALS & Baby ICU Hospitalization

Dear Friends, Family, and Kind-hearted Supporters,
We are starting this GoFundMe page with heavy hearts but unwavering determination for a cause that requires our love and support. We're reaching out to you in hopes of making a difference in the lives of those very dear to us - The Mathews family.
Katie and Scott have been married for 11 years. After years of hoping to start a family, Katie and Scott were thrilled to learn they were finally expecting. Shortly after, at just 35 years old Scott was diagnosed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).
ALS is a rare degenerative and eventually fatal neurological disease, killing the nerves and blocking proteins from building and maintaining muscles. This disease also eventually effects the ability to breathe, speak and swallow. Most people with ALS are given 2-5 years to live after their diagnosis, and there is no known cause or cure for the disease. At the same time Scott was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It is exceptionally rare for both of these diseases to occur in the same person and it is even rarer for someone this young to receive such a diagnosis.
At 27 weeks pregnant, Katie was admitted to the hospital with placental insufficiency requiring pre-term delivery. Doctors explained there was no known cause. They welcomed their daughter Noraly Laurel Mathews on July 26th at 29 weeks gestation weighing 2 lbs 2.9 oz. Noraly requires specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where she will be admitted for several months.
This GoFundMe campaign has been created to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with ALS and an extended NICU stay, and ensure that the Mathews family can focus on what truly matters - maintaining quality of life, health, family and continuing to make many more memories.
The financial burden of managing ALS is significant. Unfortunately the US healthcare system has its limits and many out of pocket costs are not covered. Katie and Scott are currently facing medical expenses including purchasing a power wheelchair and other specialized equipment as well as extensive home modifications to make their home wheelchair accessible. The costs can quickly become overwhelming.
Scott has been our close friend for 17 years. He is a vibrant and fun-loving soul with the best contagious laugh. He enjoys live music, gaming and motorcycles. He is a marathon runner and bicyclist, completing the Seattle to Portland bike ride several years ago. All of these passions are difficult to pursue now making this diagnosis even more challenging. Despite all of this Scott has shown incredible strength and resolve, being more concerned with the impact on others. He and Katie have always been there for us and others in times of need. Now, it's our turn to rally together and be the support they need.
If you are in a position to support this fundraiser please consider donating and passing along to others. Thank you all in advance for your contributions, love, and support for Scott, Katie and Noraly.
With heartfelt gratitude,
