Sorry that I haven’t updated the last few days but it has been a real roller coaster super emotional for all of us and really draining. Saturday was a great day for Scott he got off the ventilator and was talking to all of us. He was able to FaceTime with Taylor at the ukiah races and Taylor walked around the pits so he could say hello to his fellow racers. The whole racing community has been amazingly supportive of him and they are setting up fundraisers. Yesterday was a rough day, Scott was very agitated and angry it was a super emotional day for those of us around him. They had made some changes to his medications and possibly that was why we aren’t exactly sure. They also found out he has 2 bacteria infections in his wound. Mid day they started having us gown up and wear gloves to go into see him. He remembers the accident and is really on point with some things but there was definitely some confusion. He broke a tooth off and was convinced he could go to the dentist and come right back and expected us to agree when we didn’t he got extremely angry at us and thought he could get himself out of the bed and go on his own unfortunately what came about was they had to restrain him and sedate him to calm him down. It was the 1st time that all of us had to give him a little space because it felt like we were upsetting him. None of us have dealt with anything like this before and it was really scary and sad to see him this way. We know there will be ups and downs but we weren’t prepared for that. Last night I spent a lot of time online reading up on things to expect from a severe Trauma patient and also a amputation patient. All super helpful information and i realized that what we were seeing was pretty normal. Can’t take it personal gotta have thick skin and let it roll off. Today he got out of surgery at 8am and was back on the ventilator he was still restrained and pretty sedated but a lot more comfortable and not combative. I will do my best to keep updating but more than likely it will be every 2-3 days. The poor guy needs all the support we as family and friends can give him. Positive energy please.
Thursdays update... Today was a pretty good day. He was suppose to have surgery again today but as of 11 pm we are still waiting. It is a huge trauma hospital so new patients will bump him. He is still running a fever from the infection ranging from 100-101+. It was really neat when we walked in today and he was wide awake and signed mom and me I love u. It has been a challenge all day trying to learn my alphabet. He is being so patient with all of us trying to figure out what he needs. We even FaceTime Aimee and Taylor for help with the sign language. Fun fact, Scott took 4 years of sign language in high school. He is still on the ventilator, the doctors are hoping to remove it in the next few days. He wanted to listen to country music today, we even caught him grooving to the tunes. He does have fluid in his lungs and we found out today that both lungs are partially collapsed, another reason for the ventilator to still be hooked up. He also got a voice message from his son, Scotty smiled and signed Stormy to tell Ross he loves him and to give him a big hug. We are happy with his improvements and hope each day he will continue to build on it. That's it for today, I will try to get the update out earlier tomorrow.
Wednesday's update Today was a up and down day, Scott had another surgery this afternoon to clean out the wound again. The doctors think they will be doing daily surgeries for at least the rest of the week. The infection is bad, he is on a hand full of antibiotics. His pain is really bad as well, but when he gets to much pain meds his blood pressure drops dangerous low. Due to the surgery today the ventilator is doing 100% of his breathing but the hope is to dial that back tonight. He is also running a fever of almost 101 tonight. The positives today is he is opening his eyes some of the time when asked. Will nod head when asked if in pain or shake head no when asked if he is ok. I also asked him to squeeze my hand today and he almost crushed it with his strength. Please everyone keep him and my mom and dad in your thoughts and prayers. Love all of the support, you all are amazing ❤️❤️❤️
Scott was transferred late last night to UCDavis they got him all settled in and went right to work he had surgery this morning they went back in and clean some more. After surgery when they moved Scott he opened his eyes for a second another good sign. He has another surgery tonight where there will be a whole team of drs working on him they are taking more of his right leg almost up to the knee and there also going into his pelvis to find out how severe the damage is and make sure it’s also cleaned out. There hoping to be able to take him off the ventilator in a couple of days to c if he can breath on his own. Tomorrow morning we will hopefully know more after sitting down with the surgeons and finding out how everything went. Thank you everyone for keeping our family in ur thoughts and prayer
The outpouring of love and support from our community is unbelievable there are no word to express how thankful our whole family is to everyone. We wanted to give an update for today this morning they lowered his meds to see if he would respond to voices and he definitely did obviously this is so positive unfortunately the no so good part is when they went in to clean it up this afternoon they can see that the tissue is dying so there going to have to take more of his right leg up to the knee. The surgery will be done at UCDavis there plan is to transfer him tonight. Please Keep him in your prayers
My brother Scott salo was in a terrible logging accident 07/08/2022 he was flown to Santa Rosa memorial where they had to do emergency surgery and amputate his right foot. They are still assessing how serious his internal injuries are but what we know as of now he is on a ventilator, they have him on dialysis because the toxins in his blood were so high, his lower back L1-L4 are fractured, his sternum is broke, his pelvis is crushed, and he has several broken ribs. They have put in a transfer for him to be moved to UCDavis icu burn department as soon as there’s an available bed because his wound from behind his knee to the middle of his back is going to need skin grafts to be closed up. Scott is not out of the woods please keep him in your thoughts and prayers he has a long road of recovery ahead of him but right now we need him to make it through this initial trama. The whole family has received an outpouring of love from the community and we are so very thankful.
