Support Sean Dyment after his lung transplant
Donation protected
Thank you for your interest in our fundraising efforts for Sean Dyment’s double lung transplant at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center at UCLA. UCLA was one of three programs we applied to. After numerous tests this last year alone, Sean was finally added to the lung transplant list and accepted into their program so the financial reality has hit us hard. We will live in LA starting May and stay throughout the surgery and rehabilitation time. For the next 6 months to a full year, during our stay there, we are asking as many as we can for financial help to cover out of pocket expenses.
For those of you who don’t know us, Sean and I were high school sweethearts. We both went to the University of Washington, and then got married in 1994 and have lived in Vancouver, WA ever since. Sean is a Logistics Manager and I work as a Math Teacher. We have two children: Zachary Tokiji (26) majoring in elementary education and Jacob Enjiro (21), who just graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington State University.
Married for 28 years now, Sean has been living with Scleroderma and Pulmonary Fibrosis since his diagnosis in 2006. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease which means that it is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. For those of you interested, you can read more about this on the National Scleroderma Foundation website.
Managing Sean’s health the last 16 years required frequent visits and overnight stays in Seattle, WA, monitored by Pulmonary Specialist Dr. Ganesh Raghu at the University of WA. With a variety of medications and medical procedures, Sean has persevered with positivity, energy, a good attitude and without complaint. He is still the amazing person you remember!
Our Need: A transplant is a catastrophic medical expense. Doctors have been asking us about our fundraising efforts because out of pocket expenses are far more than the surgery and rehab alone.
After Insurance pays, we expect our associated costs to include the following:
· Physician Bills $100,000 (est. 20% not covered by insurance)
· Surgery for Transplant $180,000 (est. 20% not covered by insurance)
· Rehabilitation (6-9 months) $35,000
· Anti-rejection meds (1st yr.) $30,000
· Living Arrangements in CA $50,000 (apartment, transportation)
· Travel expenses (family) $20,000
Estimated total for these expenses is $415,000 (This does not include lost wages.)
To be accepted into the UCLA Program, a family member needs to live in CA with Sean the entire time. Therefore, Sean and I will both be out of work through the recovery period. Sean will use the federal FMLA.
I have been donated paid time off from the generous staff at the Evergreen School District, as well as Washington State's PFLA. I can also take 12 weeks of unpaid leave through the federal FMLA.
