Help Sean Recover And Rebuild After Spinal Injury

Donation protected

One day you're lawn bowling with your wife and friends for sunset bowls, the next day changes your life forever.

Sean’s life took a drastic turn when he was out cycling close to his home in Laguna Niguel and was hit by a car on the afternoon of Saturday, September 28th. He suffered a spinal cord injury at C7 & T1 which has left him with no sensation or motor function below his chest. However, luckily he has most functions of his arms and hands. He underwent three surgeries to decompress and stabilize the damaged areas of his spine to protect the spinal cord from further damage. The incredible neurosurgeons at Mission Trauma have given Sean a 5% chance to regain sensation or function of his lower body. As you can imagine how tough this news is, Sean and his family are holding on to that 5%!! Sean will need a lot of continued acute medical care now and in the months and years to come. This rehabilitation journey will be long and hard, as the doctors said this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Sean’s next steps are a bit uncertain, but therapy is going to be the number one focus for any chance of recovery at any percentage. Sean’s neurosurgeon has recommended Craig Hospital in Colorado to give him the best possible outcome. Craig Hospital is a top-rated hospital which exclusively specializes in spinal cord injuries and focuses on aggressively working with their patients both physically and psychologically to send the individual home as independent and productive as possible. Whether Sean’s rehab is at Craig Hospital, which is out of network and out of pocket (first choice), or another facility, it will be for an extended period of time.

Sean is strong and he is fighting his hardest, but he really needs your love, prayers, and if possible, your financial support to give him the best odds. It is our hope to help raise the funds needed for Sean during this challenging time. Sean has given so much to his community. Please consider a donation or raise awareness to others to help him and his wife Val through this journey.

All donations will help with the knowns and unknowns:
  • Obviously massive medical bills that will surely exceed their insurance limits
  • Long-term therapy which may be in Colorado for the most state-of-the-art therapy for spinal injuries and housing for his wife Val to be near Sean as much as possible
  • Improvements to their home to accommodate mobility challenges (entry/exit/bathroom/hallway/doorway clearances/retrofit first floor room/etc.)
  • Retrofitting or purchase of an appropriate ADA vehicle
  • Medical equipment
  • Ongoing medical care and expenses

Let us share with you a little bit more about Sean before this terrible accident. He is the oldest of five siblings. He celebrated his 30-year anniversary with his wife, Valorie, this past summer. He has been active and into sports throughout his life. He played football, soccer, and baseball throughout his youth and into high school. He was on the surf team while he attended college at UCSB. He currently is the golf coach at Laguna Beach High School for both boys' and girls' teams and has been for almost a decade. Sean has been a mentor and leader for the young men and women he has coached over the years, with his main goal of building good human beings for the future. He was nominated by one of his players on the LBHS Boys Golf Team and was a winner of the 2022 Crystal Apple Awards. This award is to recognize and praise an individual who is a role model and works hard and inspires their students/athletes. Sean gives back to his hometown high school by volunteering his time to run scoreboards for basketball, football, and volleyball. Sean has been a runner and currently enjoys biking and golfing in his free time. The doctors have said a big contributing factor for that 5% was how active he has been both physically and academically. Sean is inherently positive, loyal, loving, trustworthy, and compassionate with the world around him. He is going to need everything in his constitution, character, and love and support from friends and family to get through this extremely challenging road ahead.

Please donate to help Sean come back stronger and be prepared to resume his life as best as possible.
