Shamayim "Mama Shu" Harris, a longtime and beloved community leader in Highland Park, MI has suffered a tragic and heartbreaking loss. Her 23 year old son Chinyelu (pronounced CHIN-YAY-LOO, "Invincible" in Kiswahili) was ambushed and murdered by a trespassing gunman who got away.

It happened Tuesday night January 26 around 6:36pm in the very place where Mama Shu has spent years fighting violence by transforming her neighborhood from blight to beauty and serving her community.
Chinyelu played an integral role in helping build, maintain and secure the village. He was wonderful, courageous and loved children and protected them, and the village, daily. His vibrant spirit remains here, but now we are vulnerable. We are concerned for the safety of Avalon Village and the surrounding community.
***As we are here to serve and nurture the children in a safe and protected environment, please join us in raising funds to help Mama Shu heal and secure Avalon Village.***
Mama Shu's dream of creating Avalon Village was born following the death of her 2 year old son, Jakobi RA, who was killed by a hit and run driver in 2007. Now, she is once again mourning an unbearable loss.
Mama Shu has devoted her life to making Avalon Village a clean, safe, beautiful and healing place for the entire community. Funds are needed to help with costs for security measures including cameras, fencing, lighting, and staff. Funds will also be used to create "Invincible Gardens" in his honor.
Mama Shu has stepped up to help her community with peace, love and a giving heart for so many years. Avalon Village is a safe haven for many and it has been grossly disrespected. Let's come together to provide the safety, security and comfort she and our community needs and deserves during this time of healing and mourning.
We urge anyone with information on Chin's murder to contact Highland Park Police at (313) [phone redacted].
Thank you for your support.
Peace and Love.
