Help Send Amina to Study Abroad (Barcelona)

Greetings!

I’ve created this GoFundMe in hopes that loved ones and members of the community would support me in getting to Barcelona this summer. I am a Montgomery County Maryland resident that just completed my sophomore year at Norfolk State University. I was recently given information about how to go on a study abroad trip through my university. I am honored that God has awarded the opportunity to go to Barcelona, Spain from July 1st - July 27th, 2024. Studying abroad has been a dream and goal of mine since I first started to hear about what it consisted of and all the benefits that come from a study abroad trip.

Unfortunately, the cost is a huge barrier for me especially because I am a first-generation and middle/low-income college student. The program costs $4,145 and my flight is at least $1,845 (with the cost rising daily). These totals do not include other expenses such as application fees, transportation costs around the city, meal plans, or leisure spending. I was also just informed of another balance for a summer course through my university which has given me an additional cost of $1,760.

While I am looking forward to going, the weight on me and my family trying to find thousands of dollars to enjoy this academic and cultural-emergent experience is much to bear. As a social work scholar minoring in Spanish, going to Barcelona for an extended period is a blessing and I cannot wait to see how I grow academically and spiritually. I look forward to using the community as my classroom and getting exposed to a new way of life, different from the westernized norm. I hope to bring my newly acquired knowledge back to the states with me and share it with my fellow classmates in Norfolk. As well as use what I learned to become a school social worker in the MCPS system, a legislative advocate for policy change, and start a non-profit geared towards Black and Hispanic lower-income families dealing with food insecurity, different forms of violence, and drug abuse. I know this opportunity will serve me well because of my passion and dedication to education and service.
