The day I received my acceptance email from the International Medical Aid internship program was one of the best confirmations of my commitment to pursuing my medical education and experience that I have received. Although the health science studies Pre- Physician Assistant degree at Baylor has been hard work; it has only validated my plan to follow this dream to give back medically. Initially, my goal was to work in medical missions and help those who need it the most, so you can imagine my joy when I received my acceptance into a program in Kenya in line with that dream earlier than I had imagined.
International Medical Aid is a non-profit medical internship program that provides medical and public health services to impoverished countries. Founded at Johns Hopkins University, IMA delivers knowledge and experience for the student seeking to be a healthcare professional and services to the areas that need health care assistance more than anything else. IMA is a leader in international volunteer programs providing a mutually beneficial experience where students can make a meaningful contribution to disadvantaged populations throughout the world.
After deciding to partake in a gap year before applying to PA school, I began researching similar programs, and it became clear that this is precisely how I would like to devote my time. As a non-profit organization, our internship is self-funded, and I will be paying for the travel, accommodations, insurance, and other expenses necessary for the internship, training, and program. I will be staying in Mombasa, Kenya, for six (6) weeks as I shadow doctors and physicians in 6 different specialties in hospitals in the area. As an intern, I will also have the honor of conducting local hygiene and health clinics across the region. When not working in the hospital, the interns will be working with local organizations, taking classes, and learning more about healthcare differences between the United States and Kenya.
If at all feasible, I would greatly appreciate your support or financial gift to help me pursue my dream in this way. I also ask that you add myself and the group to your prayers for safety and success. I am so grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to embark on my flight to Kenya in May. Thank you in advance for any support you can offer and especially your prayers.
