Hello! We are Team 1A from Mills Park Elementary School in Cary, NC, including 4th and 5th graders Adelyn, Meghna, Tanu, Tanya, Akshara, Matthew, and Rishi (pictured above from left to right), and coaches Anirban and Priya.

We are competing in Odyssey of the Mind, which teaches students how to develop their natural creativity to solve unique open-ended problems, while also emphasizing teamwork, budgeting, time management, and public speaking, all very important life skills.

Our team chose to solve Problem 1, for which we had to design, build, and run a vehicle that travels to a drive-in theater to pick up a ticket, visit a concession stand, and reverse into a parking space. A Harry Potter movie performed by team members then takes place all around the vehicle when suddenly a special effect occurs that makes it a part of the movie!

The team worked tirelessly for the past 6 months to build the vehicle and props, write the script, and practice twice a week, without any help from parents. In addition to this long-term problem, there is also a spontaneous problem to be solved on the spot on the day of the competition.

All of this hard work paid off, as our team won 1st place at the regional tournament, then 2nd place at the state tournament, earning the opportunity to compete at the World Finals at Iowa State University on May 21-24, 2024, against other teams from all over the world! We are proud to be the first team to represent Mills Park Elementary School at the World Finals and excited to participate in such an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

To make this happen, we need your support! Any donation, no matter how big or small, will directly help offset the costs for the transportation, housing and meals on campus, and registration fee for the team, coaches, and parents, which are expected to be over $20,000.
