Help Senior Dianne Who's Facing Imminent Eviction

Children’s book author Dianne Moritz has been evicted from her home in the Hamptons region of New York after 35 years due to a rent increase of over $2.000 per month. Dianne is 78, lives alone, and doesn’t have family or friends who can help.
After suffering a fall in 2020, she lost all her retirement savings due to a 55% rent increase when she returned from rehab in July 2020 after 90 days. Her car had died and was in repair until August 2020. When she paid the bill and drove to a local shop the car wouldn’t start. She sold it to the mechanic who said he’d restore it for his son but found out he actually resold it. When her sister threw her out after her eviction in September 2023, she spent several months living in hotels, further depleting her savings.
She’s been on a local waiting list for affordable housing for four years and hasn't been given any indication when that will come through. She lives on very limited Social Security income. She has been searching for a home for the past four years, but rents have skyrocketed beyond her means and is currently renting a basement room for $800 per month, which she has to vacate by December 31, 2024.
I’m helping Dianne raise funds for a used car, so she is not dependent on people in the area who do that for a living and charge $30 an hour, and to help replace furnishings which were left behind in her previous home. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated and will go directly to Dianne. You can read more about her story in her essay at Open Secrets Magazine .
