Help Sheryl Acosta Fight Cancer

Donation protected

We are reaching out to you all, on behalf of Sheryl, in hopes of getting your help...no matter how big or small, we are forever grateful for your love and generosity.

On March 13, 2019 Sheryl was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. In the months prior she had spent time in and out of the hospital seeing doctors and undergoing testing due to complaints of chest pain, weight loss, and coughing.
After being rear ended in a car accident in January, she went to the hospital with complaints of chest pain. The doctors believed she was suffering from minor chest pain resulting from the accident and reassured her that her symptoms would pass. However, the symptoms did not pass and after not being able to breathe at work, she decided to go to the ER and was admitted.

CT scans and x-rays were ordered and the doctors found dark spots in her left lung. She was referred to an infectious disease doctor as there were initial concerns of possible upper respiratory infection, valley fever, or pneumonia. She was sent home a day later and continued to follow up with the infectious disease doctor. She received a couple rounds of antibiotics, but they didn’t seem to be reducing her symptoms.

A couple weeks passed and it was apparent that she was losing weight and was having an even harder time breathing. She went back to the ER and was admitted for another inpatient stay. Another set of CT scans and chest x-rays showed that the dark spots in her lungs had grown, but the doctors were still not able to nail down a diagnosis. After running blood tests and performing an unsuccessful lung biopsy they decided the only option would be a highly invasive wedge biopsy which would entail a long recovery period.

Sheryl was prepped for surgery and placed under anesthesia. Just before performing surgery the surgeon decided to give her chart one last look over and conferred with a pathologist. Together they finally determined that she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and it had metastasized to her left lung. Sheryl awoke from the anesthesia with the surprise that she did not have the wedge biopsy and was given the very unfortunate news. Despite being informed that she had cancer she was happy to know what was going on with her and that she could finally receive the appropriate treatment.

The doctor informed her that her form of cancer was highly treatable and luckily they had caught it early. However, due to the fast growing nature of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma it was imperative she undergo aggressive chemotherapy and radiation.

It was highly recommended that Sheryl take a leave from her work as a hospital nurse because of the aggressiveness of the treatments. She was initially on short term disability, but has now switched over to long term disability. Despite receiving monthly checks from her long term disability, she still has a difficult time dealing with an ever growing mountain of medical bills for her treatments while also having to find ways to cover the costs of daily living.

Anyone that knows Sheryl will be able to tell you about the kindness, compassion, and desire to help others that led her into the field of nursing. After graduating from nursing school in May of 2018, she has been working hard to put to use her knowledge and skills to help the people in her community. However, now she is needing to rely on the kindness and generosity of others to get through what continues to be the most difficult time of her life.

We humbly ask for your help so that she may focus on her treatments and getting better. Sheryl and our entire family greatly appreciate any help or contribution, no matter how big or small it may be. We would also like to ask that you please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she continually fights for her future.

If possible, please share our campaign link on social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and with your friends. We will keep you posted on the use of funds and her progress going forward.  Thank you for reading Sheryl’s story.
