Help Shibuya Family Rebuild Oahu Home Lost in Fire

On November 6, local Kalihi residents Kenichi and Noriko Shibuya lost their home to an unexpected house fire. Their house, as well as most of their possessions were destroyed, with an estimated $400,000 in home damages. The house cannot be salvaged and will need to be completely rebuilt.  Thankfully no one was injured in the fire.


Mr. & Mrs. Shibuya are beloved members of our community who are kind and hardworking. Some of you may remember the local delicatessen that they ran called Yuki’s Coffee Shop in Kapālama. They have 3 daughters—Karen, Dana and Jamie, as well as 6 grandchildren. The house that they lost was a multigenerational home that was also home to their daughter Karen, her fiancé and their 4 sons. It will be truly missed by the entire family. 

In 1987 Mr. & Mrs. Shibuya saved enough to purchase their family home & they were just recently able to pay off their mortgage. Unfortunately they were in the process of buying home insurance when the fire occurred. Since home insurance is the responsibility of the homeowner once a mortgage is paid off none of the damages were covered and the Shibuya ‘ohana will have to go through the very expensive process of rebuilding their home on their own.

I am reaching out to the community to ask for help in anyway possible. Victims of fires face tremendous costs & I hope this fund will help alleviate some of the burden this family faces. This was supposed to be Mr. & Mrs. Shibuya’s time to relax and enjoy retirement, they now have a long and arduous road ahead of them rebuilding their lives as well as their home.
