Hello:
My name is Allen Sales , Shirley is my wife of fifty years. We have actually been together fifty four years but Shirley loves to tell people she would not marry me until I graduated from college. She was not going to support me.
It is believed that Shirley suffered a mini stroke. This stroke has caused her memory loss and a personality change. Before the stroke Shirley was somewhat shy and reserved. Now she is very out going she loves everyone especially children. Her short term memory is nearly nonexistent. she needs my assistance in just getting dressed in the morning.
She has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's but Alzheimer's is a broad class of dementias. She has been prescribed several different meds but they do not work. One drug she was prescribed caused her to have every side effect indicated by the medications manufacturer . She lost 60 pounds before she discontinued the medication. She herself decided along with our family doctor to discontinue these meds.
Over the two years of her taking these meds we spent over $30,000. on meds with no efficacy. The cost of the meds and Dr. appointments completely wiped out our savings. I would get a job but I cannot leave Shirley alone for more that a few minutes before she becomes agitated. She constantly is worried about me leaving her. That will never happen. The personality change is believed to be a side effect of the stroke.
There is a treatment that two doctors one from a college in south Dakota and the other from a college in Louisiana, have developed called HBOT Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. They have had some success in treating memory loss with these treatments. Forty treatments are required and the series of treatments costs $10,000,00.
We have considered selling our home but then we would not have a place to live or sufficient funds to purchase or rent another home. Our daughters have families and jobs and do as much as they can to help us. But both have very "essential" jobs as do there husbands. Living with them is not an option not because they do not want us but manly because even discussing a change in our living conditions upsets Shirley. She needs to be in familiar surroundings.
If you ever met Shirley you would fall in love with her everybody does and because they love her they are willing to put up with me. She is a wonderful Wife, Mother, and Grandmother. She always puts others needs before her own. We need $25,000.00 for the treatment, medications and on going follow up. I fear that the slow decline may turn into a faster decline if we don't start the treatments soon. If you are reading this and can assist us in anyway we would be eternally grateful.
