Silas Conquering Neuroblastoma

Silas is a 6 year old fighting stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer with an aggressive reputation.  Silas, the older of twin boys, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at 3 years old. He has valiantly face each challenge to wellness that has been put in his way. He has overcame 6 months of high dose chemotherapy, 2 months of radiation therapy, and a radioactive isotope that required travel to children's hospital of Philadelphia for an experimental radioactive isotope (i-MIBG) all in the name of shrinking his softball sized tumor he has suffered with.  These were very trying times for him and us as a family.  We watched Silas' muscle and overall body atrophy under months of being bedridden. His younger twin began to outgrow Silas as he was fighting cancer and the massive amount of chemicals in his body.  Yet, after a successful tumor resection (removal), Silas began to recover. His doctors suggested immunotherapy, to build back his ability to fight off infection. This would mark the end of Silas' initial schedule of treatment. Some time passed and Silas was routinely scanned and the presence of a new tumor developed in his brain. Silas underwent an emergency craniotomy to remove the mass on his brain. The surgeons and team of doctors and nurses were able to successfully remove the cancer from his brain and Silas would begin to recover. When we thought Silas was cancer free, the disease showed up again this time in the brain again. When we were scanned initially, drs only saw 2 small tumors. In 6 days once gamma knife surgery was set up for Silas the new scan showed the cancer multiplied into 6 tumors. Neuroblastoma is truly an aggressive cancer. The surgeons were successful in removing the tumors via gamma knife lazer. Silas is currently recovering and braving the Covid-19 era with the rest of us. I am a single father caring for the twins.
