Hello!
My name is Sofi Ayala and I am a Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) person.
On October of 2018 after a crisis at my college housing, I spent 3 days at the Ogdensburg mental hospital where I got diagnosed with major depression and anxiety.
Dealing with a mental illness as an international student in the US, has been the hardest thing I have dealt with in my life. After a semester of just trying therapy, and then starting to take "try and error" medications (which gave me very bad side effects) I decided to take care of myself and take a medical withdrawal from my semester. Those who have tried psychotropic medications know the struggle that it carries, and it increases even more when you are away from your family.
I arrived in Mexico in March of 2019. I have been receiving medical and psychiatric treatment here for more than a year. I am not a neurotypical person and recently got diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Fortunately, now I have the encouragement and approval of my psychiatrist to go back to school in Canton, NY. However, my college asks me to pay off my financial balance before I can have any news of my readmission process, even after sending my medical expedient and reapplication. I was charged $1200 for international student insurance and other expenses that I was not informed of until now.
Since I came home, I have been working in an art studio, as an english teacher, and in a barber shop. Yet the minimum wage in Mexico is not enough for me to pay off my balance and go back to the university with the accommodations I need to have. I wish to continue my major in Psychology and a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. My dream is to become a social worker advocate for victims of violence.
Regardless of the stigma surrounding mental illness I am a functional individual who foresees a successful future and wants to help other people in the same situation. It will be more than helpful if you could donate any amount to my fundraising or share with your friends!
I would love to finish my degree and it would be awful if money became an impediment to do so.
Thank you so much for your time!
