HELP FAMILIES IMPACTED BY INJUSTICE
The Widjabul Wybal Black Lives Matter group have created this GoFundMe in an effort to support families of Aboriginal lives lost due to police brutality or while in custody, due to injustice in the law enforcement system. This includes families local in the Bundjalung region who have lost a loved one to systemic racism and the ongoing effects of colonisation.
Part of our intention is to purchase headstones for many unmarked graves of Aboriginal lives lost in custody. Many families have not had the means to mark their loved ones’ site. The vision is that there will be NO unmarked gravesites of Aboriginal people who died because of systemic negligence and injustice.
Just ONE local story:
David Allan Roberts a Widjabul Wybal man died in custody on the 23rd of November 2001. He was found hanging at Grafton prison. The circumstances surrounding his death were inconsistent with suicide and highly suspicious. The CCTV cameras at the prison had been turned off, meaning there is no video footage leading into, and following, his death. There has never been a full inquiry or investigation into David’s death.
David’s family has never known closure, they have never known justice. Each and every day, David’s family live with the trauma, pain and suffering inflicted by knowing David was murdered by the system. The imperialistic system built upon lies and genocide. David’s story is just one of thousands of stories of Aboriginal deaths in custody. Thousands of ways colonisation continues to kill and oppress First Nations people. There is nothing more devastating than the lack of justice surrounding these deaths. And there will be nothing more significant than unmasking the truth and healing the trauma.
The Widjabul Wybal BLM group is raising funds to honour the gravesite of indigenous victims. We will continue to raise funds to offer support to impacted Aboriginal families and to provide momentum to the Black Lives Matter movement so that we can keep the fight for justice going locally.
