Help Somali Bantu Farmers Recover from Flooding
Donation protected
Somali Bantu farmers lost 100% of their crops at Hadley and Northampton farms due to floods from the Connecticut and Mill Rivers. The farmers operate as an informal cooperative in the Greater Springfield area, sharing the 9 acres of farming land among its 20+ members.
The timing of the flood was inconvenient and devastating, as most of the crops farmers planted were a few days/weeks away from being harvested and sold at farmers' markets in two low-income neighborhoods in Springfield and West Springfield. The value of the crops is immeasurable, as farmers engage in labor-intensive farming with no to minimal machinery, and travel over 20+ miles to their farm sites weekly.
Please help support farmers so they can supplement their lost income, and prepare their fields for the next growing season.
On behalf of the Somali Bantu farmers, Thank you!
