Slavers of NY is a group of activists, educators, and researchers that use historical data and street art to expose the legacy of slavery in NYC.

Using census records and in-depth historical research, we have developed a map of over 500 locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City named for documented slaveowners, with over 200 names and counting, including locally well-known names like Stuyvesant, Bergen, and Nostrand.

We aim to use this data to educate New Yorkers on the history of slavery in this city and bring to light hundreds of years of history that have been otherwise forgotten or ignored, in order to provide access to this education and start conversations as we move toward properly reckoning with the realities of American history.

Through guerilla education efforts, we have designed and developed stickers that are being placed throughout the city along streets and within neighborhoods named for slaveowners in an effort to educate as many New Yorkers as possible about their surroundings.

We hope to continue these efforts on the ground with our sticker program and eventually expanding to additional public art efforts, as well as online with the development of an interactive map and ultimately an app that will allow users to make the entire city a history museum and allow them to explore and understand their surroundings with more depth, nuance, and accuracy surrounding the history of slavery in the city.

We are a small but resourceful 3 person team based in Brooklyn, NY. Our efforts thus far have been majority self-funded, and our future goals will require additional support in order to come to fruition and be delivered in the best way possible. If you've found the information we've shared thus far useful, informative, or eye-opening, please help us continue this work and bring it to even greater heights.

Your generous donation will go toward:

- Continued production of our street name stickers
- Contracted design and digital identity development
- Website development and design
- Interactive digital map development, design & implementation
- General maintenance and operations
- Future public art education efforts and exhibitions
