Stetson was a dedicated ranch horse for many years. Giving the best years of his life to support the livelihood of his owners, this sweet, dependable boy developed quite a stout heart. Sadly, he secured an injury to his knee and was shipped to the kill pen.

Next stop: slaughter.

But did you know that even the one that is overlooked, discarded, and least likely to be selected can have an incredible rescue story?

During the dark days of auction houses, kill pens, and rough transportation, Stetson bonded closely to a pretty momma mare who accepted his friendship. Better than being alone, they faced each uncertain day together until the owner of Christ Redeemed Equine Sanctuary (CRES) happened upon them.

CRES, searching for rescues horses for a local ranch, saw Stetson's mare friend was a great prospect! But who is this older horse with a swollen knee sticking by her side? It was clear that to take her away from him would leave him vulnerable, abandoned again by another temporary security.

It is true that taking such a horse could mean keeping him for the rest of his days... but he was so kindhearted and trying so very hard to stay afloat in the harsh environment that he was thrown into. After some prayer and thought, CRES decided to rescue them both.

Stetson had swollen eyes and a cut on his face when he arrived. He had been smashed into the trailer wall during transport, and pushed around by the masses of horses at each new pit stop along his journey. His heart was heavy and his body was so weary as he stepped off the trailer... again...after so many times before.

He steadily grew in strength and morale over the next months and CRES staff were praying for a loving home for him to finish out his retirement.

And just when his confidence made a full recovery...

Well, the most unique and awe-inspiring of coincidences happened: a family several states away with a dream to have a horse to love on their brand new farm fell in love with Stetson! A miracle and a dream come true for a weary heart and a loving family.
