Help Steven beat Stage 4 Grey Zone Lymphoma

The month of May in the Chamas household was one that we will both always remember and never forget. On May 1st we were blessed with the birth of our incredible baby boy, Brady John. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks later Steven was diagnosed with a very rare blood cancer known as Mediastinal Grey Zone Lymphoma.

Steven hadn't been to the doctors in many years, so I convinced him to go for a routine physical before we had Brady. It was a perfectly normal visit until the blood work came back. At first it was just showing that he was very anemic, however further testing showed there may be more to it. We were sent to a blood specialist to further investigate what was going on. The blood specialist decided to order a CT scan to determine what was causing the high anemia levels. The CT scan took place 05/18 at 7:30 am. At 2:40 pm we got a life changing phone call neither one of us will ever forget. The CT scan had shown a grapefruit size mass pressing up against Steven's heart and they wanted him to be admitted to the hospital that very night. A biopsy was done the next day, which later revealed his diagnosis of Stage IV Grey Zone Lymphoma.

Those of you that know Steven know he is truly one of a kind, unfortunately his cancer is no exception. Grey Zone Lymphoma is an extremely rare type of lymphoma, having both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s elements. We were told there are under 5 cases in the United States diagnosed each year. Due to the rarity of the disease, there isn't a clear universal treatment mapped out for this as there are for other types of Lymphoma. Fortunately, we have a team of doctors that has seen and treated this before. His team decided that it would be best to try a new treatment regimen of both Immunotherapy and Chemotherapy. This is a very new regimen to the team, but they are hopeful this is going to give him the highest possibility of remission and lowest risk of the disease coming back.

As I am sure you can imagine, having a newborn and a husband with a cancer diagnosis in the same month doesn’t come without its challenges. We are fortunate enough to have insurance coverage which does help; however, it seems as if every day there are new medical bills showing up in the mail. There have been many of you that have reached out wanting to help, and we really haven’t been able to give an avenue of how to do so. We have decided to start this GoFundMe for those that want to contribute. Please feel no obligation to do so, as your support and prayers are more than enough to get us through these hard times. Thank you for your love and support as we continue the fight against cancer!
