Help Sudra Regain Sight and Stability

Donation protected
Dear friends and community,

We’ve all had moments in our lives when we’ve needed help, even if asking for it was the hardest thing to do.

My dear friend Sudra is someone who always gives from his heart—one of the kindest, most gentle souls I’ve ever known. Right now, life has hit him harder than ever, and he needs our help. For four years, he’s faced unimaginable challenges, but despite his strength, he’s at a breaking point. Let’s come together to lift him up and help him find solid ground again.

In August 2020, Sudra was diagnosed with an advanced cataract in his left eye, along with the beginning of one in his right. Due to medical trauma and financial struggles, he didn't see a doctor for over 20 years making the necessity of having surgery and seeing doctors more difficult compounding an already fragile mental state. The cataract surgery, which was supposed to be routine, turned into a nightmare because of a calculation error. As a result, he’s had to endure multiple surgeries, with at least three more to go before he can see properly, drive, and work full-time again.

On top of this, during the pandemic, Sudra lost his job as an essential worker, and shortly after, he was told he had to leave the home he had lived in for nearly 30 years. After all of this, he has been living off his savings, which have now dwindled to just $400, while he’s struggled to recover his health and rebuild his life.

Currently, Sudra is staying with a friend who has generously taken him in after he was nearly homeless, but he needs funding to cover basic expenses like rent, food, and taking care of his beloved cat. He’s also juggling two part-time jobs but earns just $400-500 a month—barely enough to survive.

Most recently, his car broke down completely, leaving him with no reliable way to get to work. With car repairs and transportation costs piling up, his situation has become even more urgent.

Sudra is a fighter who has always been there for others, even during his darkest times. Now, he needs our help to get through this final stretch of surgeries, secure stable housing, and get back to work full-time. Your donation will help him cover rent, living expenses, and transportation while he continues to heal and rebuild his life.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help regain his strength and independence. If you can't afford to donate, helping to spread the word by sharing his story on social media with friends, family and community will make a huge difference in the visibility this campaign gets.

Often, we find it difficult, even shameful or embarrassing, to ask for help ourselves. Thank you all for your kindness, for holding space for this dear soul, and for being a light in his darkest moments. It wasn’t easy for him to open up, and I’m grateful to be able to help surround him with the community he needs.

With gratitude,
Sara Syms
