Help support Jake Akita (a trans poc) live
My name is Jake Akita and I am a half Japanese transgender actor, visual and vocal artist, and avid ukulele player. I am just months away from finishing an unparalleled conservatory program at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. I dream to not just become an actor but also a writer who can continue the cycle of hiring POC and transgender creatives who are just waiting to be heard.
The 2 years at the Academy have prepared me to be a professional in this industry. Within the 2 last years, I have been meeting with creatives who are making art for transgender people in the theatre. I am a confident actor who wishes to challenge the lack of representation in our industry. I am ready to seek representation that allows my identity to seamlessly be present in my work yet not distract from the character or my telling of the story.
Why am I asking for help?
Even before covid I knew living in New York would be difficult, I am blessed to even have the opportunity to live in the city. With the world we’re living in things have dramatically changed for the entertainment industry, as well as my mental heath. Its no longer an option for me to get a 9-5 until I can begin intensive treatment for my C-PTSD after graduation. Not only that but I want a real chance to be able to network with people who are looking for TGNC actors. Iwant to be the example for my younger self to finally have someone to relate to.
My medical expenses per month are $500 (testosterone and injection supplies, Adhd medication, therapy, psychologist appointments and more)
Rent I’m looking around 1100 -1250 a month. I need to live on my own to recover from my complex ptsd which means I will also be paying all wifi, electric, and gas.
Im looking for as much support as possible, even if I dont get close to my goal. Every thing helps.
I have various other expenses that family and friends may feel free to ask :).
I’m hoping this can be my chance to recover, learn and work hard to launch myself into this industry.
A huge shout out to my Mom, Papa, entire family, the Jamal family, Bonnie Barlow and anyone who has supported my art on stage or on paper. Without all of you I wouldn't even be in a spot where I coul image being successful in acting.
I’m also always doing freelance art, run my depop shop (depop.com/jakeakita), and looking for paid internships that can be digital. If interested please contact me :)
To anyone who's made it this far down, thank you for reading my story. And if anyone shares or donates, please know how grateful I am.
love,
Jake
