If you are reading this, you probably know our brother David, and what a kind, smart and compassionate man he is!  On the afternoon of April 17, 2023, David suffered a crippling subdural hemorrhagic stroke. He spent nearly three weeks in the ICU, much of that in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator.  He also developed pneumonia and multiple infections.  Now, a month after the stroke, David is still incredibly weak, with limited motor functioning on the right side of his body and difficulties with speech and swallowing.

David will likely be discharged in the next few days to his apartment in Lima, and will begin the long and arduous task of recovery. Unlike in the U.S and other countries, Peru does not have rehabilitation centers.  He will therefore need substantial in-home nursing care and rehabilitation services, as he must learn to swallow, to communicate and to walk again. When he returns home, David will also need specialized medical equipment, including a hospital bed, a wheelchair and, eventually, adaptive equipment installed throughout the apartment.

It is impossible to predict when David will recover enough to resume working as a self-employed writer and journalist. Unfortunately, he does not have disability insurance and will have no income for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, life will go on for David and Mirella, with bills to pay, food to buy, and now with the added costs of David’s post-stroke treatment and care. The portion of David’s hospital and medical bills that are not covered by his insurance will likely total $15,000.  In-home care, nursing services, and rehabilitation is anticipated to cost $1500 per month, and day-to-day living expenses for David and Mirella total about $2200 per month.

The month that David spent in the hospital was hard, but the next six to twelve months will be harder, as David and Mirella take on the biggest challenge they have ever faced – David’s recovery. Your donation will help ensure that the rent is paid, the lights stay on, and that David has access to the specialized services and supports he needs to make the fullest recovery possible.

If you know David, you know that he was always one who helped others when they needed it most, and he would be the last to ask for your help.  So, we are asking now on his behalf. With our support, David and Mirella will get through this!  Thank you for your love, your care, your prayers and your donation!
