My name is David, I'm a film critic, and every December (or January if we just so happen to be in the middle of a disastrous pandemic) I cut together my 25 favorite films of the year into a video countdown. Maybe you've seen one. They look like this:
They can all be found here.
I enjoy making them, and some people seem to enjoy watching them, which is really nice. But they take a lot of time — like a LOT of time — and I'm old and have a kid now, and I think at this point I can only justify making them if it's for a good cause. And that's where you come in. Maybe. If you want to. No pressure.
I'll happily make a video countdown for 2021 if — and only if — I can raise at least $10,000 for Rich Family Ministries, a New Orleans non-profit whose mission is to provide families, communities, and the accused of Louisiana with the resources they need to actively engage in their legal matters.
The founders of Participatory Defense Movement New Orleans, which offers a community organizing model for people facing charges, their families, and communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the landscape of power in the court system, Fox and Rob Rich are a formerly incarcerated couple who served 21 years before receiving clemency in 2018.
Their story is bracingly told in Garrett Bradley's recent documentary TIME, which happens to be the #1 film on this year's video countdown, and serves as both a powerful testament to Fox and Rob's resolve, as well as a gutting illustration of the support that people who've been ensnared by the Louisiana justice system — overwhelmingly people of color — have been denied by every level of government.
This fundraiser has been launched with Garrett's direction, and in direct partnership with Fox and Rob themselves, and 100% of the proceeds will be gifted to their foundation — every dollar you donate will help empower the families of those who need these resources to have a chance of defending themselves.
If this fundraiser successfully raises $10,000, I'll make another video for 2021 (and likely launch a similar fundraiser for another non-profit along with it).
If this fundraiser greatly EXCEEDS that goal, I'll make another video for 2021 *and* I'll do it while thinking optimistic thoughts about the compassion and generosity of ordinary people in the face of systemic oppression (you'll be able to tell the difference!).
If this fundraiser falls short of that goal, well, I'm happy to say that Rich Family Ministries would still receive 100% of everything we'd managed to raise, and that's really all that matters.
These are extremely difficult times all around, and I understand that soliciting donations — even to a valuable cause — is a lot to ask right now. Perhaps too much for too many. But for those who can give, this is also an urgent time to help those in need, and these silly videos are the best leverage I have to marshal that help. So here goes nothing!
Thank you!
