Haddonfield Community Center in South Sudan
Donation protected
OVERVIEW:
Garang Buk Buk Piol and I met in 2018, when we came to Emory University to pursue our Master's in Development Practice degree. Anyone who has met Garang will find that it's hard to articulate in a few sentences what an incredible human he is. He is a constant source of kindness, humility, and resilience to many of us. As we prepare to graduate and say our goodbyes amidst a pandemic, it is my sincerest hope that we support him and his work through the Haddonfield Community Resource Center in Aweil, South Sudan.
Aweil is the permanent home to Garang, and his wife and three children who reside there currently. The original building of the Haddonfield Community Resource Center was founded and constructed in 2012 by Garang. The funds raised here will directly --
- Ship 2 metric tons of books collected and stored in Atlanta (by Books for Africa) overseas. These books include short stories, novels, early childhood books, primary and secondary materials, and textbooks in the social and natural sciences, public health, and more. This shipment will help diversify learning materials and improve education in Aweil.
- Rebuild the library which was recently damaged by heavy winds and floods. The support will cover the cost of cement, corrugated iron sheets, windows, doors, etc.
- Expand the library into a community resource center with a computer lab.
South Sudan has experienced significant conflict for many years and the ensuing humanitarian crisis has affected South Sudan’s education system and institutions. This is particularly devastating for the long-term prospect of South Sudanese youth. The Haddonfield Community Resource Center is critical to this end, providing a safe space that facilitates learning, education, and community for people of Aweil and the Northern Bahr al Ghazal region.
We understand that this is a difficult time for many, and we deeply appreciate any donation towards this initiative. Your donation is a gift and no goods or services are provided in return. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
With immense gratitude and warmth, Bianca & Garang.
