Help Support Libby & The Daniels Family

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I write to ask for your help to support my niece and her family as they navigate a complex time undergoing medical diagnosis, treatment, and determining future care. I am writing on behalf of my brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Theresa Daniels, in hopes to alleviate as much medical and care costs as our community can!

The Story

Last Monday, my 13 yr old niece, Libby, wasn’t feeling well and was driven home from school to rest. Her parents assumed she was a little dehydrated or possibly some low blood sugar (aka something minor). As my brother says, “When you hear hoofbeats, you think horses not zebras right?”. On waking Tuesday morning, Libby experienced sudden onset paralysis from the neck down. She was immediately rushed to the hospital in Paris, Texas, and then care flighted to Children’s Medical Center in downtown Dallas, Texas where she is receiving care.

Quick hats off to the medical team/plane from Texas Children’s that swooped in to get our girl and bring her to safety. Theresa likened the pilots and Veteran EMTs on the plane to the elves in “The Santa Clause” movie. They did an excellent job keeping Libby and Theresa as comfortable as possible in a scary situation.

Once arriving in Dallas, a team of doctors have been running an extensive set of bloodwork, scans, tests, spinal fluid analysis, imaging etc in order to pin down a diagnosis. As of right now, the doctors are thinking it’s an extremely rare autoimmune disorder called Transverse Myelitis. Transverse myelitis is a complex neurological disorder. Long term impact and recovery varies per diagnosis, so we are doing everything possible to give Libby the best chance at rehabilitation.

As for now, Libby is undergoing a variety of treatments including plasma exchange (medical community calls this Plex) and intensive physical/occupational therapy. At a minimum Libby, Peter, and Theresa will be in the hospital full time for the next 5 weeks. While Peter and Theresa are focusing full time on Libby, our immediate family is watching their other beautiful children, Finn (11), and Penny (9) and dogs. Shout out to Peter’s neighbors who are watching their ducks, chickens and turtle!

As you can probably tell by now, there are both short term and long term monetary impacts to the family. All donations, no matter what size, will go directly to Peter & Theresa Daniels to cover Libby’s extensive medical expenses, including her prolonged hospital stay, surgeries, treatments, and the ongoing care she'll require during her recovery period.

A little about Miss Libby Lynn!

Libby is a beautiful 13 year old ray of sunshine. She has the biggest smile, the funniest laugh, and the sharpest sense of humor. She is funny, quirky, and a caring and sweet soul. She excels in acting, has been picked for school leadership opportunities, loves to swim, sing, dance, draw and collage in her journal. Her favorite color is pink, and she misses her siblings, puppies, ducks, chickens, and turtle, in that order :) Libby is the oldest of 3 children and an incredible big sister to her brother, Finn, and sister, Penny. They run as a pack and are extremely close friends and confidants. She is handling this entire experience like a champ, and continues to amaze us with her bravery, tenacity, sass and overall incredible personality and determination.
