Meet Rose.
Rose is an 18 year old high school senior and a soldier in the Florida National Guard. She is kind hearted, intelligent, and funny. She enjoys ROTC and is proud of her family and her military service. She has a younger sister whom she loves dearly - and she desperately needs your help.
Early Christmas morning, Rose’s parents were murdered in cold blood in their home. The killer was an ex boyfriend of Rose’s who was unable to accept her rejection of his romantic advances. He drove from Texas to Florida with the intention of killing Rose and her family. Rose’s quick thinking saved the rest of the family, but her father died at the scene and her step-mother died from her injuries 7 weeks later. This was the only mother in Rose and her sister’s lives – these were their parents. Suddenly orphaned and traumatized, Rose finds herself in a difficult position. Although fully committed to the National Guard and attending drill on the weekends, she is still a high school student and her military service cannot fully begin until after she graduates in June. She has also been separated from her sister, who has been placed in an emergency shelter because she is a minor. Rose fought to keep her sister, but is not able to support her while still in school. Her sister turns 18 in November, and it appears that the girls will get to be together at that time.
Rose has been working part time, living with friends and family since the murders, and has managed to continue to be successful in school. Against all odds, she is on the right path. The homeless liaison for her school district has been working closely with her to set her up for future success – providing everything from immediate needs (groceries, a dress for the military ball, cap and gown fees, etc) to long term education (financial counseling to learn budgeting and how to build credit). The National Guard Foundation has also stepped in – covering the funeral expenses for Rose’s father and providing short term relief with other expenses such as car insurance and groceries.
Rose’s resources have nearly been exhausted and she still has so many needs – and several months until graduation. She does not have a permanent place to live, she struggles to put food on the table, take care of her own basic needs, and get to and from school, work, and drill. She is driving a car that needs repairs and because of her school and military commitments, there is not much time left for working. Rose was not awarded any money in the wake of her parents’ murder and will not be eligible for social security death benefits. She is in great need.
Hers is a situation that will greatly benefit from the generosity of others. What Rose needs is not a band-aid – it’s a bridge to the next step. She has a bright future – a future in which she will have the tools to provide for herself and her family. With your help, she can get there.
Anything raised beyond the goal will go to the continued support of Rose and her sister. Thank you in advance for your selflessness.
