Help Support the Aaberg Family

My name is Mike and I am fundraising for my good friend and co-worker, Shawn Aaberg and his family.

Shawn is married to Tammy, and they have several children together. Shawn is 51 years of age and has worked for the Federal government for 27 years, two of which were in the Army and the rest as a Mail Carrier with the USPS in central Minnesota. Shawn is not only a dedicated worker, he is a wonderful husband and father. He enjoys spending time with his family, camping, four-wheeling, hiking and nature. Shawn was very healthy prior to the tumor being found and had been on no medications or any other medical treatment.

After experiencing some troubling symptoms, Shawn went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal Adenocarcinoma Grade 2 this year. His tumor is the size of a peach and was nearly fully obstructing his colon resulting in emergency colostomy surgery. Shawn spent several days in the hospital recovering from this surgery and will need additional surgery in the future.

The doctors have told Shawn and his family that this type of cancer is not genetic and has likely been there for at least five years. This cancer is susceptible to stress, and Shawn’s family have certainly faced challenging times over the years having lost two of their sons, Justin at age 15 in 2010 and Andrew at age 30 in 2023, as well as a carjacking at gunpoint involving his wife and oldest daughter. The stress likely contributed to Shawn’s immune system malfunctioning and causing the cells to mutate and grow into cancer.

This week, Shawn received a port and underwent his first round of chemotherapy. He is currently struggling to keep his pain under control. Ongoing treatment will consist of three chemotherapy medications every other week, and they were told it will be intense treatment over the span of four months. Medical bills are already stacking up and will only get worse as his treatment continues. Shawn is unable to work during this time as chemotherapy can be challenging. His wife has had to take a lot of time off work to help Shawn with medical appointments and general support.
