To friends, family, and all who graciously chose to stop by this page today, thank you..
About two months ago, on July 13, our family’s loving father (Jin Hwang) suffered a stroke (left-sided cerebrovascular accident) that temporarily paralyzed the right side of his body and sent him to the emergency room. Jin spent the next four days and three nights in the hospital, undergoing multiple tests (CT Scan, MRI, MRA, echocardiology, etc). The weeks that followed have been and continue to constitute some of the most financially, spiritually and emotionally trying weeks of our lives.
For Jin, the physical effects of the stroke remain, displayed most clearly in his continued difficulty in eating, writing and sometimes speaking. Even after multiple exams and tests, the doctors were unable to determine the exact cause of the stroke. His body has become especially sensitive to stress and following the doctor’s recommendation, he is currently taking the semester off from his responsibilities at school.
Out of respect for our supporters, we wish to be as transparent about our family’s financial situation as possible. Jin is an ordained pastor and has dedicated his life to ministry. After serving at multiple churches in the Los Angeles area as a preaching/teaching pastor while also serving as a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, he obeyed God’s call to help rebuild a small Christian institution in Atlanta, Georgia.
In recent years, the school has been struggling severely with low enrollment and as a result, insufficient funding. Jin joined the faculty in September 2017. Given the dire financial situation, he and other employees of the school have been receiving significantly reduced and delayed pay. Consequently, for the past two years our family has had no other concrete source of income besides the intermittent amounts the school is able to afford. Despite financial hardship, Jin and his wife have been serving at the school with a strong conviction that God has sent them there and hope to see it thrive again.
Last week, our family was notified that the final medical bills came out to $42,000 (hospital, doctors, ambulance). In addition, despite receiving the doctor’s recommendation to see a neurologist and neurosurgeon, Jin has not been able to see one because of the fees associated with it.
With very little source of income and lack of health insurance, our family is currently unable to support this financial burden. We, as a family, are doing everything we can. Our mother is continuing to help out at the school as one of the supporting staff and is currently looking for a second job. Our oldest brother, David, moved to Atlanta to enable our parents to carry out their mission by supporting them financially. He is currently working full-time at a Korean restaurant.
Financial struggles are not new to our family but, by God’s grace, we have avoided the need to ever publicly request any kind of financial support. However, only after being denied multiple times by Medicaid (Medical insurance for low-income families in Georgia) and the hospital charity fund are we left with this platform and social media as a final resort.
Our family continues to choose to trust God within the midst of this hardship. We trust that as he has been faithful to us for the past 20+ years as a family, he will continue to be so. If God is willing to use this platform to deliver and support our family, then we pray that his will be done and he be glorified in it.
To those of you who find it within your hearts to support, whether it be financially, prayerfully, or by simply sharing this page, we would like to express our deepest gratitude. Thank you and God bless you.
