On November 1, Kalen and Maria were notified of two life threatening pregnancy issues that could be fatal to both Maria and their unborn baby. After seeing a High Risk doctor in Anchorage, Maria was admitted to providence only a few short days after. An emergency MRI has confirmed a uterine window (tearing that can lead to rupture) and Placenta Accreta Syndrome - both complications can lead to catastrophic bleeding and loss of life for all involved. Steps were immediately taken to help encourage lung growth and protect against long term neurological issues for the baby- all but 22 weeks along, a baby born this early has a lot of challenges ahead.

Providence has admitted Maria for a long term hospital stay where she can be constantly monitored- maintenance drugs to control contractions, regular imaging for uterine tear growth, and strict bed rest to encourage a longer gestation, etc. The estimated hospital stay will be about four months long, throughout the holidays, and into the new year (March 2023).

This has derailed the family in so many ways. There are two beautiful girls involved who are suffering over their mom being sent away. A husband who works full time and now is left to pick up shattered pieces while worrying about the safety of his wife and baby. In addition, the intense financial stress this is causing regarding childcare, loss of wages so kalen can be apart of NICU and high risk counsel/ screenings/ appointments/ at the hospital, and finding help for miscellaneous things that are financially draining. This fund is to help alleviate stress so these next four months can go by a little easier. It’s going to be a very long journey for this family and the donations will really be a huge help so kalen can be there for Maria. Especially once things start progressing and fear of unknown sets in.

All of this is a waiting game of unpredictability. We pray for the best result possible and try to find peace that Maria is in the safest place she can be right now so we can have both mama and baby return home safe. This will be a distant memory soon
