Help Sweet Dog Who Became Paralyzed Overnight

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Karla, my boyfriend Garrett and I adopted Milo three years ago from the animal shelter. On Saturday, May 14, Garrett and I woke up to Milo hyperventilating in the backyard with abrasions on his legs. We quickly realized he was unable to move his two back legs. We rushed him to the Emergency Animal Hospital of Collin County. To summarize this: we were not given a proper diagnosis for our dog after being at the vet for over 12 hours. We have never felt so hopeless and heartbroken for Milo. Garrett and I are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure Milo receives the best care. Unfortunately, I am a full-time college student finishing my Bachelor's in Psychology at TWU. I am responsible for paying out of pocker for classes each semester. We don't want money to be the reason that our poor dog is suffering. But, we don't want to give up yet, as there is still hope. Milo is so young that surgery would be his best option for recovery. I know we are asking for so much, but we are not ready to let go of Milo. He is the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever known. We have always treated him like our baby. We are not ready to give up on him. Against all odds, we believe he can get better. We are 100% comitted to caring for Milo during this process. Please donate anything possible. I know how hard times are right now, but anything is appreciated.
To give a better timeline of the story, this is how things happened:
  • We woke up around 10:00 am to Milo, unable to walk. We quickly took him to his primary vet, which was closed. After this, we went to EAHCC. The vet, Dr.K, told us she suspected a blood clot.
  • At 1:00 pm, they sent us home promising updates after doing tests/X-rays. After not hearing, we called for an update around 3:00 pm. Dr. K said she noticed an abnormality in Milo's spine, but she did not "think it looked horrible." Dr. K told us she no longer believed it was a blood clot. Dr.K also said everything else (organs/blood work) looked good. She said she was going to talk to the Radiologist to confirm Milo did not have any blood clots, but at that moment, Milo was stable.
  • At around 5:00 pm, we received another update confirming it was not a blood clot and we could visit him. Dr.K mentioned a slipped disc in his spine but nothing else. Dr. K said they would try and let Milo pee, but if unsuccessful, they would call us before putting in a catheter.
  • Dr. K told us about visiting hours, so we saw Milo at around 9:00 pm. When we got there, we were immediately overwhelmed with information from the vet tech. After Milo was at the vet for almost 11 hours, the tech was the first to inform us that Milo had IVDD. The tech assumed we were already told of the diagnosis. We didn't have the opportunity to talk to the vet as she was in surgery, so the tech tried to explain it. The tech told us it was a spinal disease that quickly progresses. Although Milo could not move his legs, he was still able to feel sensation in his back legs. But, the tech told us he needed emergency surgery in the next 12 hours before it progressed to Milo not having any sensation in his back legs.
Not only did they wait 11 hours to tell us this diagnosis, but they were super insensitive. The tech wanted us to call two other emergency animal hospitals to find out estimates for IVDD surgery. Both hospitals could not give us an estimate and reiterated that it was not protocoled to speak to owners as they need the information from medical staff. The receptionist was extremely rude after we told her this, and she did not let us check out Milo.
We went back this morning and were better told our options. So far, we have spent $1233, plus they want to additionally charge us $1078 for overnight. Even though we asked for him to be discharged last night. It was evident there was a lot of miscommunication.

What is clear is that surgery is expensive and ranges from $8k-$10k. There is a 50% chance that Milo will walk again after surgery.

Please help us, we are desperate.
