Help Tairn the black cat and his injured leg
Donation protected
This 3-year-old black cat was brought into the hospital where I work this past Thursday evening with a severe wound to his left front leg after he had been missing for 2 weeks. He may have been attacked by a coyote or hit by a car. His owner was not able to care for him and had decided to euthanize. I couldn't do it and ended up taking over his care. He was very scared and in a lot of pain, but seems to be a nice sweet boy.
The initial plan was to amputate the leg, but after further evaluation by surgery, there is still some chance to save it. He is currently hospitalized for pain management, antibiotics, and daily bandage changes and wound evaluation. He doesn't have any fractures, but the flexor tendons and soft tissues on the back of that leg are all destroyed. We are hoping that enough granulation tissue and scar tissue forms to stabilize it. If not, he may need an arthrodesis later or amputation.
Together with the veterinary nurses working that night, we have named him Tairneanach (Tairn for short) after the black dragon in the recent fantasy book, Fourth Wing. He tested positive for FIV, which means that he might have a weakened immune system. However, many cats with FIV can live a long healthy life. The virus is transmitted via bite wounds, so he can also live with other cats, as long as he isn't terribly aggressive. So far he seems like quite a docile boy (and he got neutered, so that will also help).
Tairn has been eating well and seems to appreciate chin and face scratches. I'll be back in the hospital over the next couple of days to check in on him and will be posting regular updates here. I have taken financial responsibility for his care, but of course it is an unexpected expense. His current bill as of 2/17 evening is at $3650. If anyone would like to contribute to his treatment, I would appreciate it. All money donated will go directly to his care. I probably can't even keep him, but I do have one of his nurses lined up to foster him while he heals further. If neither one of us ends up adopting him, he will need a home once he is well enough!
