We have never made a crowdfunder before now…

PROJECT GOAL: The Pigeon and The Dove is an evolving project about the housing crisis with big dreams. We are keen to reach a wider audience with this show and are asking for help with funding for the following:

  • Record and release an album of the songs from the show

  • Film the show to make available online

  • Create a Podcast of the show

  • Pay for Promotion

  • Pay for Tour / Venue rentals in other cities

This is how we will take this ever evolving show to more people - as this housing crisis isn't going away any time soon. We will do our very best to connect our actions to our values by helping folks see themselves in the people on the street. Music makes anything possible.

MORE ABOUT THE PIGEON PROJECT

The Pigeon and The Dove: A History of Hatred & Love is a powerful new lo-fi folk opera (and potential podcast) about Pigeons! Well, really, it’s about housing insecurity and the many roads one can take to end up on the street. A mix of comedy, social justice, and dark yet danceable tunes. But really…it’s about pigeons.

Written, directed and performed by Carolyn Victoria Mill.
Music created and performed with Reid Jamieson.

**WINNER of the Vancouver Fringe Stir Social ImpactAward**

“A tremendously important and much-needed piece of work.” Vancouver STIR

“A compassionate ode to the invisibilized struggles of the unhoused” The Vancouver Arts Review

Much like the homeless and the housed, the pigeon and the dove are, in fact, the same damn bird. ‘They’ are ‘Us’. Through celebrating the lowly pigeon, we will explore how perception affects the support we offer those experiencing homelessness and how we may prevent this global crisis on a local level. Inspired by the works of Buffy Sainte-Marie and Dr. Gabor Mate, Vancouver singer-songwriting couple Reid Jamieson and Carolyn Victoria Mill (aka CVM) use a mix of music and comedy to explore the tipping point, where we go from housed to homeless, with a wider variety of causes than we might think. With cycles of lighthearted vignettes about the much-maligned pigeon, related insight from local housing advocates, and dark but danceable songs reflecting on just some of the many roads one can take to end up on the street. By singing these stories we may find them easier to hear. But really, it’s about pigeons. Prepare to be amazed by this fascinating bird of lost paradise, as we take an eye-opening journey of perception – with a bird’s eye view of those living on the street.

GRATITUDE

Thank you all for taking the time to consider this, and especially to those of you who have come out to the show. This is a big deal for us. Our first attempt at anything like it, our first attempt at musical theatre of any kind. We created this while working full time, managing chronic illness, and making the world’s first tribute album to Buffy Sainte-Marie (!), all in an attempt to connect us to our shared humanity.

Thank you to TJ Dawe for an early workshop that kickstarted the Pigeon. To our dear neighbours Lanny and Keegan for generously creating and donating my wings, and to my husband Reid for believing in me and sharing this dream. And to the Vancouver Fringe, their kind crew, and incredible team of volunteers - you really do make the world go round. To the many generous donors, sponsors and patrons, you made this all possible and affordable.

Please keep in mind that many folks are dealing with multiple risk factors at the same time, and our songs reflect just SOME of the stories about how people go from housed to homeless, told from our imperfect and privileged point of view. We hope you understand, and we hope felt something too. All errors and omissions are my own.

Our hope is to flesh out these stories, record an album of the songs, and take this show on the road and online. As fully independent artists, we can only beg your support in making this happen while keeping a roof over our own heads. If this is something you would like to see reach a larger audience, please consider donating or becoming a patron of the pigeon arts. We are honoured that you took the time to see us or read about this today, and humbly ask you to spread the word. Thank you for helping the pigeon take flight and making this little songbird’s dream come true. ~ CVM (+Reido)

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

REID JAMIESON & CVM – singer songwriter duo – Vancouver BC

“Gorgeous, sun-struck acoustic soul”- Globe & Mail

“Prepare to be surprised” – Vancouver Province

Vancouver’s Reid Jamieson & CVM are a vocal powerhouse making music that matters and moves us. With an incredible voice, spirited guitar playing, and a magical way with melodies, Reid is that rare songbird whose originals are every bit as compelling as his interpretations. In years past, Reid was a regular on CBC’s Vinyl Café, has recorded with Cowboy Junkies, and performed with Mary Margaret O’Hara, members of Blue Rodeo, Be Good Tanyas and more. A classic introvert/extrovert combo, Reid shines alongside his saucy wife and long-time songwriting partner Carolyn Victoria Mill, where their unique harmonies and swapping of lead vocals make for an eclectic, entertaining, and sometimes heartbreaking variety show. Together they won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and wrote their way in to the Vancouver Folk Festival by winning 1st place in their Pickin’ a Folk Star contest. Their latest all original album ‘Me Daza’ was recorded in Ireland with producer Kieran Kennedy (Maria Doyle Kennedy) which features the posthumous vocals of Fergus O’Farrell (Interference, Once). There is nothing traditional about the record – or this dynamic duo. Tireless promoters of voting, equality, and love, they thrive on creating intimacy, causing tears and laughter in equal measures. 2023 saw them launch an all original folk opera about Pigeons(!) and the causes of housing insecurity, premiering it at the Vancouver Fringe Fest where they took home the prestigious Social Impact Award for their first ever musical theatre piece. Following up on tributes to Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, 50/60s era gold, and what could be mistaken for a simple holiday record, they are currently trying to figure out how to release the first ever tribute to Buffy Sainte-Marie they have been working on for the last two years! You won’t want to miss what they do next…
