Help Tang Xiong With Writing Program Costs

Who I Am

Hello, I am Tang Xiong, an aspiring writer hoping to learn and improve on my storytelling skills geared towards HMong stories. I used to be an English teacher who enjoyed telling stories of the HMong experience such as spirituality, history, and social issues. After thousands of years of oppression, regaining the HMong narrative became important to me when I realized many HMong students were interested and curious about their own heritage. Instead of feeling "crazy", we became connected to each other through our supernatural experiences.

Naturally, my curiosity opened up more when I did not have all of the answers for my students. I began taking classes to learn more about HMong people's ancient history beyond the Vietnam Conflict. Through discovery, I learned to love the traditions that withstood many tribulations.

What I Need

Less than a week ago, I was informed that I will be part of the Year-Long Novel Writing Project cohort at the Loft Literary Center. As ecstatic as I am, my financial constraints stand in the way of beginning this journey. I am asking for donations to help fund the program costs. This is a common barrier for HMong creatives. Without the help, I will have to withdraw from the program and try again next year.

Making this dream come true means a lot to me, since I always preached to my students to follow their dreams. I left my full-time job to devote more time to my exploration of creating stories about Hmong people. The financial support will enable me to overcome my creative writing obstacle.

My Writing Goals

The writing program begins in February 2024 with the final draft submission in December 2024. In between that time, I will be working with an experienced mentor and cohort. I want to write a novel that shows the spiritual connection that the HMong people bravely hold on to. I believe that HMong stories are truly unique and artful. My story will be one that is familiar to the HMong community, but has not yet been openly discussed. This story will include funeral traditions, beliefs, and spirits.
