Help Tania Beat Cancer

My dear sister friend, Tania, received some scary news a few months ago about the big C, and will be heading to Lebanon to do a double mastectomy this fall. Tania’s out-of-pocket costs are estimated to be over $10,000. For anyone who knows Tania, they know that she is a firecracker with a passion for life. Tania is a friend to many, and has touched countless students’ lives in her role as a chemistry professor at both Florida State University & Clemson University.

As few of you have already known, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, it is the earliest stage, noninvasive DCIS, yet aggressive, which means if it comes back, it will come as aggressively invasive, which would be scarier.

May has been a very tough month, going through all the tests, trying to figure out what's next, contemplating why me, trying to keep my work in check and trying to have some fun.

But if you know me, you know I'm a fixer, I like solutions and if I can control something I don't dwell or stress about it, I fix it. So I have decided to go to Lebanon in August to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction.

I will be gone for few months (but I will be back!)

This procedure is medically not necessary, my situation can be solved by a lumpectomy and radiation then medicine. But I do not want to live the rest of my life wondering if and when will it come back. This was my decision, and as me, my decision was the extreme.

I am thankful to be proactive and never miss a mammogram and MRI, with my high risk situation, there was a high chance of having this disease at some point in my life. But I was not expecting it so soon or even at all (what are the chances of 3 women in one house?)

Since covid, I have been struggling figuring out my life in the states, I am extemely lucky to have made amazing friends and have an amazing job with amazing colleagues and students. But having a family and living among my people is something I dream of. Maybe this problem will help me decide whether I belong here or somewhere else.

I am sorry to any person I have hurt in my life, I do believe that I have done enough good to outweigh my mistakes.

Lastly, if you know me, I don't like too much sympathy, I hate feeling weak, and as with every problem I faced in my life, this shall pass too. I draw my postivity and my strength from ppl I care for and love. And I am thankful for every person in my life that sends me their positive energy .
